Historia
In the early 1900s, teenaged Sunja, the adored daughter of a crippled fisherman, falls for a wealthy stranger. When she discovers she is pregnant–and that her lover is married–she accepts an offer of marriage from a gentle, sickly minister passing through on his way to Japan. But her decision to abandon her home, and to reject her son's powerful father, sets off a dramatic saga that will echo down through the generations. Profoundly moving, Pachinko is a story of love, sacrifice, ambition, and loyalty.

Really enjoyed this book
Revisado: 04-11-25
I really enjoyed this story. Having lived in Japan for six years in the 90’s, it was a joy to have memories renewed….the language and locations were familiar having lived in two different areas. The story was one that just kept pulling me in for one more chapter, a few more minutes….it ended too soon. I also saw Korean friends who experienced this discrimination while looking for housing… it continues.

Historia
In 2019, Tim Kaine—Virginia Senator and former Democratic vice presidential candidate—commemorated both his sixtieth birthday and his twenty-fifth year in public office by undertaking a three-part journey across the Virginia landscape as he hiked, cycled, and canoed across the state. His chronicle of the journey became an organic reflection of the extraordinary events occurring across America during that time, including impeachment trials, a global pandemic, growing racial protests, the January 6th attack on the Capitol, and more.

Listen to the audio book..
Revisado: 03-26-24
I highly recommend listening to vs. reading this book as the audio book has the addition of beautiful music. The story is riveting… at times it moved me to tears. May we all live as these women did…with courage, tenacity, kindness and compassion. They show the best of women kind under extraordinarily horrific times.

Historia
In the summer of 1942, the Rabinowitz family narrowly escaped the Nazi ghetto in their Polish town by fleeing to the forbidding Bialowieza Forest. They miraculously survived two years in the woods—through brutal winters, Typhus outbreaks, and merciless Nazi raids—until they were liberated by the Red Army in 1944. After the war, they trekked across the Alps into Italy, where they settled as refugees before eventually immigrating to the United States.

This book is heavy reading/listening.
Revisado: 01-31-24
This book is hard to listen to…just the abject cruelty that this family endured. It was hard to tell where the book was going with the opening chapter but then in the end it circles around and all is clear. The epilogue, extra chapter by the author and the recordings by Tobin and Ruth at the end show the love that survived and thrived. All should listen to this book. We must never forget. I had a Professor in college that was a Holocaust survivor…like so many, he would not talk about what he had survived. I am grateful that the family in this book shared their story so we can all learn.

Historia
The number one New York Times best-selling story about American Olympic triumph in Nazi Germany, the inspiration for the PBS documentary The Boys of '36, broadcast to coincide with the 2016 Summer Olympics and the 80th anniversary of the boys' gold medal race. Out of the depths of the Depression comes an irresistible story about beating the odds and finding hope in the most desperate of times - the improbable, intimate account of how nine working-class boys from the American West showed the world at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin what true grit really meant.

The “good” of the boys in the boat…the best of America.
Revisado: 01-13-24
Excellent book. I enjoyed how the history of the world was intertwined with the individual and team stories of the boys in the boat. I also liked that the epilogue filled us in on their lives long after they left the boat and the Olympics.
