Thoughtful
Revisado: 04-10-25
Love Kingsolver! Her essays are thought provoking and lyrical. Pertinent in 2025 as they were in 1999.

Born in the United States, but reared in Mexico, Harrison Shepherd finds precarious shelter but no sense of home on his thrilling odyssey. Life is whatever he learns from housekeepers and, one fateful day, by mixing plaster for famed muralist Diego Rivera. When he goes to work for Rivera, his wife, exotic artist Kahlo, and exiled leader Lev Trotsky, Shepherd inadvertently casts his lot with art and revolution.

… Wow! You want to believe it really happened. Made me look more at Frida Kahlo and her art. Quite an extraordinary read.

Historia
William Fryer Harvey (1885-1937) was an English writer of short stories, particularly in the mystery and horror genres. August Heat is one of his best-known stories. It tells a most peculiar tale of James Clarence Withencroft, an artist who is inspired to draw a sketch of a prisoner in the dock being sentenced. Later the same day, he goes out for a walk and happens upon a stonemason's workshop, where he meets the very man he drew in his earlier sketch.

Am I missing something? I got a beginning, the start of the middle and no end. Confusing!

Historia
In the middle of the night, in a house on a quiet street in suburban Minneapolis, intruders silently murder Luke Ellis' parents and load him into a black SUV. The operation takes less than two minutes. Luke will wake up at The Institute, in a room that looks just like his own, except there's no window. And outside his door are other doors, behind which are other kids with special talents - telekinesis and telepathy - who got to this place the same way Luke did: Kalisha, Nick, George, Iris, and 10-year-old Avery Dixon.

Firestarter part 2
Revisado: 10-20-19
But not as suspenseful. Narrator had an annoying habit of speaking in character even for the narrative part of the story not just when the character spoke. Very distracting. Story just so-so.
