Another "Police Procedural" cliche

This book is written like someone who got all of his police knowledge from watching TV and movies and none of it from actual research. For example, when the main character takes out his gun, he always has to rack the slide. That is all fine in TV and the movies, but in real life, no police officer in the world needs to do that. It was already done when they put on their uniform while getting ready for work. "No way the FBI is taking over, this is MY case". "I don't want to go see the department shrink after putting 16 bullets in some guy's head. No way man, I'm fine" Etc etc etc. The main character is completely unhinged. The bad guys are over the top bad. The dialogue is just so very bad. Everyone is a "Piece of !@#$" (that phrase is spoken like 2 dozen times throughout the book). Do better Robert Ellis.

I'm sure this author was something special in his community collage creative writing class but as a professional writer he is just terrible. It is just cliché after cliché after cliché. And such terrible metaphors. . . "it was hard like some metal". And there is a scene where the fire department is called to a small brush fire (in winter, nonetheless) and everything about the scene is like the author just watched Reno 911 to get his "facts". They are not a "squad", they are an "engine", there are not 5 members riding said engine there are 4 at best and that he implied that they finished drinking their coffee before responding because it was not in a house on fire is absolutely ridicules. And did I read later that people put money into the firefighter's "metal" helmet? Is there a book where you just extract every stereotype in a police procedural and then write a novel? Because that was what this was. If you want to watch a made for TV prime time special then this is your Jam. If you want to read something where the author actually thought out the plot then avoid this novel at all cost. I mean, has the author ever even been to Buffalo, NY? I've watched more compelling mysteries while watching Scooby Doo.

Cliché after cliché after cliché. I just don't know what was going on here. There are better books by recent college graduates. You are buying the author's name only but not anything that has ever made him an exceptional writer. Just awful.

Not judging here but this is mostly Christian propaganda disguised as a story. This was not for me.

You ever watch a trial on a lawyer TV show like on Law and Order? Pretty interesting, right? Then watch an actual trial on TV? Pretty boring and nothing like the TV show. Now imagine that same boring real life trial but with legal explanations and introspective about being old and aging. And BINGO . . . you get this book. Long winded and boring. Seemed more like an example of a trial for a law class then anything of entertainment value.

Pretty much just a fictional what-if based on the Slendor Man stabbings in WI. But about 75% of the book is from the point of view of an out of touch, fly off the handle, in denial mother. Not my favorite.

I'm not really sure what to say. Here is how I viewed the book. A woman's kid gets kidnapped 10 years ago then gets returned with severe emotional scarring. Then for the rest of the book his mom yells at him for not talking and thinks everyone she knows is responsible for the kidnapping. It is so so so frustrating listening to the main character constantly being upset with her emotionally crippled child the whole book.

Not really a Joe Pickett novel

Any additional comments?

All of the things that make the Joe Pickett series are missing from this book like the dynamic between Joe and his family and Joe doing game warden stuff. Instead the author tried to imitate everyone else who is out of ideas and introduce terrorism into this series. Predictable stereotypical terrorists too. Not to mention that the plot was so far out of touch with reality. Pretty much the worst Joe Pickett novel to date. Oh, and not to mention that Joe Pickett is really in only 1/2 the novel.

What would have made Sworn to Silence better?

A more original story and more unique characters.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Great disappointment. This book is one mystery cliche after cliche. The author just didn't seem to know much about police from anything other than TV shows. Stupid stuff like "Don't leave town". The chief was a homicide detective for 2 years but in the first 15 minutes of the book she didn't know basic forensic stuff. The police in her department (every one has a nickname) swear and talk on the radio like the Duke boys but when she needs them, they are all professional CSI/Investigators.

Any additional comments?

I liked the concept of an Amish woman turned police officer but it was a huge fail.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

I think that this series has played itself out. The story was kind of dull.

What do you think your next listen will be?

I'm going to give Star Force a rest for a while. I couldn't wait for the next one to come out after my first listen and now I'm just no longer interested.

What does Mark Boyett bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The reader does a good job of using voice to differentiate characters. I actually like him as a reader very much.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

I just couldn't wait for the book to end by the last third.

Any additional comments?

I hope that this is the final book in the series but I'm sure it isn't. The last 3 hours of the book just dragged. There was a ridiculous fight scene near the end that had to make even the most die hard fan grown. In the last 10 minutes 2 characters are taking and character 1 asks character 2 if they can just go the evening without talking about something (trying not to spoil anything) and character 2 says "sure, I just want to make sure you know . . . " then rambles on again for another minute. Then character 1 asks again if they can not talk about it again and character 2 says "yes, as long as you understand that. . . " then rambles on again about pretty much the same thing.
