Historia
When her estranged mother dies, Stella is left with an unusual inheritance: a one-way plane ticket and a note reading “Go to Paris.” Stella is hardly cut out for adventure; a traumatic childhood has kept her confined to the strict routines of her comfort zone. But when her boss encourages her to take time off, Stella resigns herself to honoring her mother’s last wishes.

Please go back to memoirs...
Revisado: 06-28-24
I found this so disappointing! I love the author's nonfiction, but Stella is unengaging, the plot is predictable, and even my favorite places in Paris are reduced to quasi-magical caricatures. I was so looking forward to this and absolutely can't get through it. the narrator does a decent French accent, but her Francophone-speaking-English is no good.

Dark, funny, hopeful
Revisado: 02-06-24
Alexander C Kane has a gift for creating completely recognizable, wildly original versions of the world we know, then filling them with flawed and hilarious characters. I love them all.

Historia
Based on seven years of ground-breaking research and hundreds of interviews, I Thought It Was Just Me shines a long-overdue light on an important truth: Our imperfections are what connect us to each other and to our humanity. Our vulnerabilities are not weaknesses; they are powerful reminders to keep our hearts and minds open to the reality that we're all in this together.

Where's the de-esser?
Revisado: 09-17-22
The narration is painfully sibilant. Brown has some good anecdotes and insights, but in audiobook format it's clear how repetitive the book is. It might have been better in print, where you could skip ahead

Revisado: 11-30-21
I waited for this book for years and loved every minute. Kane's cliffhangers are killer, and his characters are so much fun. I have only one complaint: I have to wait for the next one.

Historia
Anna does boring things for terrible people because even criminals need office help and she needs a job. Working for a monster lurking beneath the surface of the world isn’t glamorous. But is it really worse than working for an oil conglomerate or an insurance company? In this economy? A sharp, witty, modern debut, Hench explores the individual cost of justice through a fascinating mix of millennial office politics, heroism measured through data science, body horror, and a profound misunderstanding of quantum mechanics.

Suspenseful, weak ending, over-dramatic narrator
Revisado: 01-07-21
Most of the story is compelling, with a couple of big holes in character development and loose ends that feel like a naked play for a sequel. The narrator sounds more like she's emoting at a table read than reading a book aloud--I found myself reviewing passages to imagine how they'd land if read without maximum emphasis on every word.

Lite... And I miss Ray Porter!
Revisado: 12-29-20
It's a short story, so there isn't a lot of time to develop plot, but it was lighter on character development than his other work. And Ray Porter's voice sounds like Dennis Taylor to me, so the harsher, more ominous voice of the narration sounded forced.

Historia
Two men, each handsome and unusually adept at his chosen work, embodied an element of the great dynamic that characterized America’s rush toward the twentieth century. The architect was Daniel Hudson Burnham, the fair’s brilliant director of works and the builder of many of the country’s most important structures, including the Flatiron Building in New York and Union Station in Washington, D.C. The murderer was Henry H. Holmes, a young doctor who, in a malign parody of the White City, built his “World’s Fair Hotel” just west of the fairgrounds.

With Assassination Vacation, she takes us on a road trip like no other, a journey to the pit stops of American political murder and through the myriad ways they have been used for fun and profit, for political and cultural advantage.

Thoughtful, funny, patriotic
Revisado: 11-12-18
Listen to the sample first to see if you like Sarah Vowell’s voice. I like her literary and spoken voices, but not everyone does. I appreciate how she looks back to forgotten parts of American history and places them in context. Not everyone likes the cameo voices; I do, but I’m not sure why some characters get them and others don’t. Wordy Shipmates and Lafayette are my faves of hers so far, but I enjoyed this too.

If your funny older sister were the former deputy chief of staff to President Barack Obama, her behind-the-scenes political memoir would sound something like this. Who Thought This Was a Good Idea? is an intimate and admiring portrait of a president, a candid book of advice for young women, and a promising debut from a savvy political star.
