Great addition to the Arc of a Scythe series
Revisado: 08-07-18
This series is a bit weak on character development, but it actually doesn't matter much. The ideas and plot are so interesting that any possible weaknesses are forgiven. This book leaves us wanting more, which we will thankfully get.
I actually got a print copy of this book from the publisher through a contest before it was published, but enjoyed it so much that I also purchased it on Audible. A very good novel!

A great Murakami starter book
Revisado: 11-13-17
If you've never read Murakami before, this is one of the best books to start with. It has all the elements he's known for and the story is fascinating. Don't let the fact that it's the third book in a series scare you off, because it can be read independently. You don't need to have read any other book to read and enjoy this one.

One of 2017's best listens
Revisado: 10-17-17
I've listened to over a hundred audiobooks so far this year, and this one is in my top five. The premise is fascinating and the story is well-written and unpredictable. It got my vote for Goodreads Best Young Adult Fantasy & Science Fiction. I'm really looking forward to finding out what happens in the next book.

Solid hard sci-fi, but the characters are lacking
Revisado: 04-21-17
The story is good and the writing is great, There's a lot here that's quite interesting—alternate history, a mysterious Nazi gadget, alternative worlds. What's missing, however, are interesting characters. You don't get to know any characters as much as you'd like, even for a short novella like this. And as interesting as the rest of the elements are, I find it difficult to become invested in a story if I don't care about or even know much about any of the characters involved. Having said that, I did enjoy this enough that I'd probably listen to this again sometime. I haven't made up my mind about whether to continue on with the series yet, though.

My favorite book
Revisado: 12-31-16
Not only is it my favorite book, but also my favorite audiobook. I usually stay away from audiobooks with multiple narrators, but it works for this one. The story is told by alternating characters, each read by a separate narrator. And they all give great performances.

Historia
Jeremiah Stumpf is certain of two things: he loves his country, and his next door neighbors are terrorists. Between counting and recounting his cache of gold and silver coins, cleaning his assault weapons, and emailing Paul Ronsen, his Libertarian superhero, Jeremiah devises a plan to deal with his neighbors in a way that is uniquely American. Unfortunately, his neighbors are not what he thinks they are. They are something much worse, something beyond his comprehension.

Funniest book I've come across in years
Revisado: 12-06-16
Would you listen to American Zeroes again? Why?
I would, because it was entertaining and I enjoyed it.
What does Joe Quirk bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
The performance was excellent, and the different accents were very well done. The one thing about the performance that I'd say wasn't perfect was the speed of it. The delivery seemed slower and more drawn out than most others. I would suggest starting this book at at least 1.5 or 2 times the normal speed.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
It definitely made me laugh. It's certainly unsettling and makes you think, but there's nothing to make anyone cry.
Any additional comments?
Just about everyone knows someone like the main character, who is a paranoid, over-the-top, right-wing conspiracy theorist. It's a little unsettling to be inside the head of someone like this, but the books still manages to be hilarious.

In 2004, as Pope John Paul II's reign enters its twilight, a mysterious exhibit is under construction at the Vatican Museums. A week before it is scheduled to open, its curator is murdered at a clandestine meeting on the outskirts of Rome. Best narration I've heard
Revisado: 10-25-16
Starting with the narration, it's the best of any audiobook I've listened to. His voice and accent are great and fit well with the subject matter. I wish he'd read some of my other favorite novels.
The book itself is terrific. It's even better than The Rule of Four, which I didn't expect at all. The characters are realistic and interesting. The backdrop is the Vatican, and the book gives you so much information about the buildings, employees, customs, and politics there. It's so good that it's guaranteed that I'll pre-order all books forthcoming books by Ian Caldwell.
