Had me from beginning to end
Revisado: 04-02-25
This book kept me invested from the beginning to the end. The main character, Jordan Glass stumbles upon an art exhibit of entitled Sleeping Women. There's a couple of problem though - one is that there seems to be a portrait of her. Then there are some questions as to whether the subjects are sleeping, or sleeping forever.
Jordan Glass isn't going to sit around and do nothing. She's a photojournalist used to working under tough circumstances. Including in war zones. This book has plot twists galore and moves fast. You'll have to pay attention. The book is narrated expertly by Susie Breck.

well done first novel of Murakami
Revisado: 04-02-25
I'm still waiting for the day when we are allowed half stars on reviews because I want to give the story 4.5 stars! I've read (and mostly loved) several other books by Murakami. This is his first novel. It's titled after a Beatles song because music is important to the characters and the author.
I think this would be classified as a coming-of-age book as we follow the main character, Toru Watanabe, starting in the 1960s in high school. He has two main friends: Kizuki and Kizuki's girlfriend Naoko. Sadly. Kizuki dies by suicide. This affects them both. We follow Watanabe through his young adult life. I don't want to give away spoilers. I would suggest reading this book for yourself.
Most of Murakami's books after this have a weirdness about them, science fiction or magical realism - I'm not sure how they are all classified. It was great to see where he started. I listened to the audiobook narrated by John Chancer, who did an excellent job.

another enjoyable episode
Revisado: 04-01-25
This is another enjoyable book of this series. I've been reading a few a year; all except one have been four stars. The main character is Precious Ramotswe, owner of the No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency, traditionally built woman, and proud citizen of Botswana. These are cozy mysteries with a plot mix coming from the detective agency cases and problems of the characters. I would suggest starting on book one, but it's probably not necessary. I listened to the audiobook. Lisette Lecat does a wonderful job narrating.

Different. That is my review. I'm not going to give trigger warnings, but if you are a sensitive reader, then you might want to search those out. This book is not like "The Convenience Store Woman." I'll probably read her future books because her writing style is good. The narrator is excellent.

excellent story, but please include a PDF of maos
Revisado: 03-31-25
I loved this book and am quite surprised by the number of 1 and 2 star reviews. I'm reading more Irish books this year, so some historical fiction seemed fitting. I listened on Audible and just found out there are maps and footnotes. There is no PDF of those on Audible. Please fix that! I need to look at a paper or ebook before I move on to the next book. The narration was excellent.
The story starts with the main character boarding the Titanic with his parents for a visit to his sister in America. Most Irish passengers are in steerage, and this shows the treatment of the Irish from the start.
A few years later comes the Rising of 1916. We have been following the main character Ned through the years. You'll need to pay attention as there are quite a lot of characters. The book is fairly long as it needs to be with so many historical events and the lives of the characters as well.

My 28 year old and I got to see Gary Paulsen give a talk years ago. We got a signed paper copy which I read and loved. I rarely reread books, but I listened to this for a buddy read. The narrator helps add another dimension to this book and I enjoyed it even more. I even made my 28 year old listen to the funniest chapter with me. I highly recommend this book!

Historia
Myrlie Louise Beasley met Medgar Evers on her first day of college. They fell in love at first sight, married just one year later, and Myrlie left school to focus on their growing family. Medgar became the field secretary for the Mississippi branch of the NAACP, charged with beating back the most intractable and violent resistance to black voting rights in the country. Myrlie served as Medgar’s secretary and confidant, working hand in hand with him as they struggled against public accommodations and school segregation, lynching, violence, and sheer despair within their state’s “black belt.”

an important story
Revisado: 02-17-25
I knew ahead of time that I would feel sadness and anger at Medgar Evers' death. It was harder because the author brings their lives into focus. She chronicles their lives as they relate to the Civil Rights Movement. I knew that Medgar was an activist, but I didn't know much about him.
I want to thank Joy-Ann Reid for writing this book. You helped me to understand things a little bit more. In these times, it's more important than ever to study this history.
The author narrated this book, but there were a few places where the volume was off, usually too high. The sound engineer could have tweaked this.
I would encourage everyone to read or listen to this book.

Historia
In September 1921, four young men and Ada Blackjack, a diminutive 25-year-old Eskimo woman, ventured deep into the Arctic in a secret attempt to colonize desolate Wrangel Island for Great Britain. Two years later, Ada Blackjack emerged as the sole survivor of this ambitious polar expedition. This young, unskilled woman - who had headed to the Arctic in search of money and a husband - conquered the seemingly unconquerable north and survived all alone after her male companions had perished.

A remarkable story of the Arctic
Revisado: 02-17-25
This is a story of survival, but it is really a story of heartache. Ada BlackJack was dealt a hand that she had little control over. She went to Wrangel Island with four men, but there were supposed to be other Eskimos as well. Eskimo was the term used in the book because of the time period. I don't know if she was Inuit or Yupik (there are alternate spellings), so I have been using Eskimo.
The man who set up the expedition didn't go. We learn about him and the men going. We learn about preparations and the time on the island. We learn about the aftermath as Ada BlackJack is the only survivor. All through, I'm rooting for this young woman. Her story didn't end at her rescue.
I listened to the audiobook, which didn't have the pictures or maps. I ended up borrowing the ebook from the library so I could see them. I'd like to give this 4.5 stars. Audible - please add a PDF of the maps and photos!

My favorite of her books so far
Revisado: 02-10-25
This is my fourth book by Elizabeth Acevedo and my favorite so far. I listened to the audiobook read by the author. I'm not the target audience of Young Adult books. I'm an old woman. I was into poetry some as a teenager, but most of my stuff wouldn't have stood the test of time.
This book has heart, conflicts, and joys. It's about a teenage girl who begins to write poetry. She has a twin brother, immigrant parents, and a best friend, all living in Harlem. I will not give any spoilers.
I give this a hearty five stars.

Historia
To his customers and neighbors on 125th street, Ray Carney is an upstanding salesman of reasonably priced furniture, making a decent life for himself and his family. He and his wife Elizabeth are expecting their second child, and if her parents on Striver's Row don't approve of him or their cramped apartment across from the subway tracks, it's still home. Few people know he descends from a line of uptown hoods and crooks, and that his façade of normalcy has more than a few cracks in it. Cracks that are getting bigger all the time.

The story drew me in, narration is perfect
Revisado: 02-09-25
First off, before I even talk about the story, let me say that Dion Graham was perfect for this story. I know there were a couple of parts his voice was a little too soft, but the sound engineer should have caught that.
This book has been awaiting me on Audible for a while, and is my first book by Colson Whitehead. He invented a cast of characters who I could feel for and against. The main character, Ray Carney, is someone I rooted for from beginning to end. Sure, some dealings might have been a little sketchy, but it's tough to get by in city. I also loved tge humorous parts that usually caught me unaware.
I grew up in a different city, but I remember the mid 1960s. This book felt true to the times. I have a friend who sold vintage furniture and I was surprised at how well the author described the furniture of Ray Carney's furniture shop.
I'll be back for more Colson Whitehead. And Ray Carney. I love this book.
