Historia
For most of its 5,000-year existence, China has been the largest, most populous, wealthiest, and mightiest nation on Earth. And for us as Westerners, it is essential to understand where China has been in order to anticipate its future. These 36 eye-opening lectures deliver a comprehensive political and historical overview of one of the most fascinating and complex countries in world history. You'll learn about the powerful dynasties that ruled China for centuries; the philosophical and religious foundations-particularly Confucianism, Daoism, and Buddhism-that have influenced every iteration of Chinese thought, and the larger-than-life personalities, from both inside and outside its borders, of those who have shaped China's history. As you listen to these lectures, you'll see how China's politics, economics, and art reflect the forces of its past. From the "Mandate of Heaven," a theory of social contract in place by 1500 B.C.E., 3,000 years before Western philosophers such as Thomas Hobbes and John Locke, to the development of agriculture and writing independent of outside influence to the technologically-advanced Han Dynasty during the time of the Roman Empire, this course takes you on a journey across ground that has been largely unexplored in the history courses most of us in the West have taken. In guiding you through the five millennia of China's history, Professor Hammond tells a fascinating story with an immense scope, a welcome reminder that China is no stranger to that stage and, indeed, has more often than not been the most extraordinary player on it.

A spare and full history
Revisado: 08-02-20
This history frames the centuries of chaos and hardships in a Danish modern way. Detailed and sweeping at once the author doubles back again and again to illustrate continuity and evolution
I have been reading on China for a while and kept marveling as disparate pieces appeared to glow when put in Context .

Delightful, though providing full of surprises
Revisado: 06-25-20
Curzan’s point of view is precious..she is so scholarly that she sits on panels that grade words and she references wicked arcane tomes. The Title absolutely give no clue to the fun in store. This Professor frolics and delves and explains things you didn’t know were cryptic with so much relish that I forgot this was a Course, after all.

This delicious to hear the narration at production a perfect I read this book in1070 as I began life in NYC. To hear these intertwined story’s with the narrator sing parts I did know wee music on first glance. Amazing tale of New York and the USA frozen in the poet’s amber.

When Nixon opened China we got Madam Maos Balletsand photos of Kissinger grinning Who would have thought anything amiss? Glad I read it before the Corona plague. This was a catalogue of evil just listing the breadth of casualty and the small cadre around Mao. Nowhere near as intriguing as the Dowager Empress. Raw read.

This book is a joke
Revisado: 01-17-20
Not only does the author simply list the names of sites repeatedly without analyzing them other than their locations. There are MULTIPLE references to a pdf that an be downloaded. This is annoying by the third time and after the seventh it becomes apparent that this announcement accounts for about 5% of the content. UNACCEPTABLE USE OF MY Listening. I feel cheated by this pedestrian repetitiveness and serious lack of content.

Historia
Goodwin describes the broken friendship between Teddy Roosevelt and his chosen successor, William Howard Taft. With the help of the "muckraking" press, Roosevelt had wielded the Bully Pulpit to challenge and triumph over abusive monopolies, political bosses, and corrupting money brokers. Roosevelt led a revolution that he bequeathed to Taft only to see it compromised as Taft surrendered to money men and big business. The rupture led Roosevelt to run against Taft for president, an ultimately futile race that gave power away to the Democrats.

Historia
Lincoln is the cornerstone of Gore Vidal’s fictional American chronicle, which includes Burr; 1876; Washington, D.C.; Empire; and Hollywood. It opens early on a frozen winter morning in 1861, when President-elect Abraham Lincoln slips into Washington, flanked by two bodyguards. The future president is in disguise, for there is talk of a plot to murder him. During the next four years there will be numerous plots to murder this man who has sworn to unite a disintegrating nation.

Good novel if you know the subject
Revisado: 07-22-19
The structure is brilliant ..we enter the story as Lincoln enters Washington under threat and in disguise... the threat deapens and the president is revealed through his appointments, his words and others’ diary entries.
The war comes and battles are variously highlited..showing war room reaction as they read telegrams... A brilliant history ...if you can piece it together .. a good novel with a character showing the Resistance and salted with autentic quotes.. even though it is packed with facts I would not recommend as an introduction to either Lincoln or the civil war.

What a chatty wonderfully told history of this kind and tough leader. I am old enough to remember him as sharp dresser and midwestern like we were. The Astonishing part is when you realize that this “Everyman” held as steady to the reins of power as he did guiding a brace of horses down a furrow. So authentic and delightfully loyal was this man it was a pleasure to come upon this biography

Historia
Because of our shared English language, as well as the celebrated origin tales of the Mayflower and the rebellion of the British colonies, the United States has prized its Anglo heritage above all others. However, as Carrie Gibson explains with great depth and clarity in El Norte, the nation has much older Spanish roots - ones that have long been unacknowledged or marginalized. The Hispanic past of the United States predates the arrival of the Pilgrims by a century, and has been every bit as important in shaping the nation as it exists today.

Cannot imagine an incident that was not included. Particularly interesting was the clarification of how Puerto Rico becomes the failed state. Mexico is a long history marvelously woven in. I appreciate that the author clearly defines his position although far left of mine the honesty is welcome
