Historia
Evangelical Christians are perhaps the most polarizing—and least understood—people living in America today. In his seminal new book, The Kingdom, the Power, and the Glory, journalist Tim Alberta, himself a practicing Christian and the son of an evangelical pastor, paints an expansive and profoundly troubling portrait of the American evangelical movement.

Historia
Harriet Tubman: Conductor on the Underground Railroad was praised by the New Yorker as “an evocative portrait,” and by the Chicago Tribune as “superb.” It is a gripping and accessible portrait of the heroic woman who guided more than 300 slaves to freedom and who is expected to be the face of the new $20 bill. Harriet Tubman was born a slave and dreamed of being free. She was willing to risk everything - including her own life - to see that dream come true. After her daring escape, Harriet became a conductor on the secret Underground Railroad.

Fascinating, almost unbelievable, story of Harriet Tubman, and a picture into the lives of enslaved people before and through the Civil War.

Historia
Bryan Stevenson was a young lawyer when he founded the Equal Justice Initiative, a legal practice dedicated to defending those most desperate and in need: the poor, the wrongly condemned, and women and children trapped in the farthest reaches of our criminal justice system. One of his first cases was that of Walter McMillian, a young man who was sentenced to die for a notorious murder he insisted he didn’t commit. The case drew Bryan into a tangle of conspiracy, political machination, and legal brinksmanship—and transformed his understanding of mercy and justice forever.

Revisado: 06-05-23
Harvard educated attorney, Bryan Stevenson shares his successful, yet often heart-wrenching and uphill battles on behalf of people who are poor and, and unable to protect themselves against an often cruel Legal system, and those who perpetuate it.

Historia
Keri Blakinger always lived life at full throttle. Growing up, that meant throwing herself into competitive figure skating with an all-consuming passion that led her to nationals. But when her skating career suddenly fell apart, that meant diving into self-destruction with the intensity she once saved for the ice. For the next nine years, Keri ricocheted from one dark place to the next: living on the streets, selling drugs and sex, and shooting up between classes all while trying to hold herself together enough to finish her degree at Cornell.

Jaw dropping story.
Revisado: 12-16-22
Keri does not spare her self as she tells her dramatic story of her plunge into addiction and debauchery which landed her in prison. thanks to her skill as a writer we also get to see the abuses that occur behind prison gates that go unchecked but for people like Keri bringing them to light. For me, an informative memoir that kept me on the edge of my seat.

Disturbing and…
Revisado: 12-14-22
Disturbing, thought-provoking, and interesting. I enjoyed having multiple voices moving the story forward. Disturbing as it should be as it looks at slavery in its various aspects with its assumptions of religiosity. Also look into hardships experienced by Irish persons escaping starvation in their home country.

Historia
Sleep is one of the most important but least understood aspects of our life, wellness, and longevity. Until very recently, science had no answer to the question of why we sleep, or what good it served, or why we suffer such devastating health consequences when we don't sleep. Compared to the other basic drives in life - eating, drinking, and reproducing - the purpose of sleep remained elusive.

Comprehensive discussion of sleep with extremely important information
Revisado: 09-10-21
Clear and understandable discussion of the importance of sleep by a researcher with deep knowledge of the subject. Bottom line: sleep is critically important to virtually all aspects of our health and most of us do not get enough.
Starting with the surprising universality of sleep in the animal kingdom, progressing through a description of the different stages of sleep followed by descriptions of the incredible damage done to our health and psyches from even relatively brief periods of inadequate sleep are illustrated by specific studies and examples. As a physician, I am disturbed by the lack of training we have had in this area and the utter lack of concern demonstrated in many residency programs with regard to the importance of sleep for their own residents. The book discusses this as well as many other examples with insight and conviction that should motivate us to commit to adequate sleep with gratitude and open arms.

Historia
Many of us know the Black Death as a catastrophic event of the medieval world. But the Black Death was arguably the most significant event in Western history, profoundly affecting every aspect of human life, from the economic and social to the political, religious, and cultural. In its wake the plague left a world that was utterly changed, forever altering the traditional structure of European societies and forcing a rethinking of every single system of Western civilization: food production and trade, the church, political institutions, law, art, and more.

Fascinating and entertaining
Revisado: 06-23-21
Dorsey on Armstrong presents the story of the black death in a very accessible and interesting way. She looks at it from many perspectives and has just enough repetition for my old mind to grasp and remember. Despite being produced before our current pandemic, she is prescient with regard to our current experience and risks we face even today.

I very much enjoyed the presentation (played at the speed of 1.1) including the different voices which kept things clarified. Another tragic and hopeful story from World War II atrocities. It provided new and different insights into the concentration camp experience of this talented man who dodged some of the worst but saw more than enough tragedy.

Twelve years ago Matthew "the Rocket" Rising had it all. Married to his high school sweetheart and one of the winningest quarterbacks in the history of college football, he was the number one NFL draft pick. But on the night of the draft, he plummeted from the pinnacle of esteem. Falsely accused of a heinous crime with irrefutable evidence, it seemed in an instant all was lost—his reputation, his career, his freedom, and most devastatingly, the love of his life.

A football story full of saccharine
Revisado: 03-29-21
I tried to like the story and at several points I did enjoy it. Unfortunately it was difficult to envision many of the circumstances which were implausible to imagine happening in real life. The characters were stereotypes. Stillwell did a reasonable job of bringing the characters to life but even played at 1.4 speed the story felt oh so syrupy.

Family insights into the creation of Donald Trump
Revisado: 02-27-21
This book helped me to understand some of the sources of Donald Trump’s pathology. The book is written by Mary Trump, Donald’s niece who is now a psychologist. She helps the reader to see how Donald’s father, Fred encouraged many of the damaging traits that made Donald who he is. She also discusses hardships experienced by Donald‘s older brother, Freddy at the hands of their father, Fred leading to Freddy’s early demise. While I appreciated the books content, I found Mary’s reading style to be less enjoyable.
