Historia
Home alone with her young children during a blizzard, a mother tucks her son back into bed in the middle of the night. She hears a noise—old houses are always making some kind of noise. But this sound is disturbingly familiar: it’s the tread of footsteps, unusually heavy and slow, coming up the stairs. Shrouded in the shadows, she sees the figure of a man appear down the hallway. Terrified, she quietly wakes her children and hustles them into the oldest part of the house, a tiny, secret room concealed behind a wall.

Haunted house mystery
Revisado: 08-08-24
I never get tired of these types of stories. The haunted house, the sensitive artistic heroine, whom everyone is suspicious of.

Historia
Everyone who knew him told stories about Lawrence, and Lawrence told stories about everyone he knew. He also told stories about himself, again and again: a pioneer of autofiction, no writer before Lawrence had made so permeable the border between life and literature. In Burning Man: The Trials of D. H. Lawrence, acclaimed biographer Frances Wilson tells a new story about the author, focusing on his decade of superhuman writing and travel between 1915, when The Rainbow was suppressed following an obscenity trial, and 1925, when he was diagnosed with tuberculosis.

Depressing
Revisado: 01-31-24
This biography is depressing. I haven’t listened to all of it, I had to quit it. I’m disillusioned with DH Lawrence as a person after reading this. Didn’t know what a mess he was. But then he died young. He suffered with his physical health for a long time, which seems to have impacted his mental health. As for his novels, Sons and Lovers is great, the Rainbow not so great, stylistically, but worth a read as a prequel to Women in Love, in which Lawrence seems to have matured as a writer. I read Lady Chatterly’s Lover years ago, not sure I want to re read it. I recall the novel as being mostly about sex, which was more interesting when I younger. I plan to read the White Peacock next.

Historia
Set in the rural midlands of England, The Rainbow revolves around three generations of Brangwens, a family deeply involved with the land and noted for their strength and vigour. When Tom Brangwen marries a Polish widow, Lydia Lensky, and adopts her daughter Anna as his own, he is unprepared for the conflict and passion that erupts between them. Their stories continue in Women in Love.

Not his best, stylistically
Revisado: 01-19-24
Some of the writing was too “abstract” for my taste. I just skimmed over those parts, trying to get the “gist”. It wasn’t so bad as long as I had an idea of what Lawrence was referring to, such as the interior life of the characters. The story is good, sometimes the writing is good. His previous novel which was written in a more traditional style was easier to read. The novel which is a sequel to this one contains better writing too. So one shouldn’t be discouraged from reading other of Lawrence’s novels, if this is the one you happen to read first. Despite his flaws, personally and professionally, Lawrence is one of my all time favorites.

Historia
Late one winter afternoon in upstate New York, George Clare comes home to find his wife killed and their three-year-old daughter alone—for how many hours?—in her room across the hall. He had recently, begrudgingly, taken a position at a nearby private college (far too expensive for local kids to attend) teaching art history, and moved his family into a tight-knit, impoverished town that has lately been discovered by wealthy outsiders in search of a rural idyll.

I feel guilty
Revisado: 09-05-23
After trying to listen to this, I decided to get the paperback. I couldn’t make any sense of the Audible reading. The reading seemed to be skipping around. The chapters were out of order. That’s why I give the performance such a low rating. As for the story, it’s well written, the writer has talent. But the story makes no sense. It’s set back in time, so I guess that might the reason it seems so politically incorrect and just plain dumb. I think to the modern reader’s eye it’s silly and offensive. It makes me wonder what the writer is thinking. Is she serious or is she messing with me? I’m feel guilty for enjoying this book.

Awful
Revisado: 07-15-23
The author doesn’t seem to know anything about which she writes. Maybe that’s why the ending was so preposterous.

Pretty good
Revisado: 02-14-23
I actually enjoyed this novel. It’s different than anything I’ve read lately. The characters were believable to me as people. The narrator was pleasant enough (some of the narrators I’ve listened on Audible sound awful). There’s a lot of sex, I wasn’t very interested in, at my age (probably fascinating to the YA crowd). In addition to Normal People, I also read the paperback version of Conversations with Friends, which I didn’t like as much in the beginning, but was glad I stuck with it in the end.

Historia
For years, rumors of the "Marsh Girl" have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. Sensitive and intelligent, she has survived for years alone in the marsh that she calls home, finding friends in the gulls and lessons in the sand.

Meh
Revisado: 10-18-22
This story is old fashioned and sentimental. The romanization of nature, the comparing of human behavior to animal behavior most tiresome. The characters were unbelievable and stereotypical. The only thing that made it tolerable was the performance of the narrator, who I feel did a good job.

Historia
In 1945, the great American poet Ezra Pound was deemed insane. He was due to stand trial for treason for his fascist broadcasts in Italy during the war. Instead, he escaped a possible death sentence and was held at St. Elizabeths Hospital for the insane for more than a decade. While there, his visitors included the stars of modern poetry: T. S. Eliot, Elizabeth Bishop, Charles Olson, and William Carlos Williams, among others. They would sit with Pound on the hospital grounds and discuss everything from literary gossip to past escapades.

Puzzling
Revisado: 10-18-22
I always assumed that artists and poets were almost always left wing, politically. After listening to this it is still hard for me to grasp how someone as brilliant as Pound could be a fascist. I just don’t get it. The only explanation seems to be he was not well mentally. Which is why he was in the “bughouse”. This is one more example of how we often need to judge the art apart from the artist.

Great all around
Revisado: 07-18-22
Sometimes the reading is not so great even though the story is interesting and the book is well written. This, however, was a beautiful reading, I really enjoyed the speaker’s voice. And I learned how to pronounce Rimbaud (the d is silent). I just finished reading a biography of Rimbaud by Graham Robb which helped me to appreciate this reading of Rimbaud on Audible. As a Doors fan, I finally see the influence of Rimbaud on Jim Morrison, in his lyrics.

Historia
Georgia O'Keeffe, one of the most original painters America has ever produced, left behind a remarkable legacy when she died at the age of 98. Her vivid visual vocabulary, sensuous flowers, bleached bones against red sky and earth, had a stunning, profound, and lasting influence on American art in this century.

Disappointment
Revisado: 12-27-21
I was delighted in the beginning, reading about young Georgia as an artist. But disgusted when she gave up teaching to live with a married man. And then become very rich. I realize now why so many people are skeptical about the art world. Even her “work ethic” seems alienating to me. She worked very hard. But I would have liked to seen her relax more. Live more. Money, in excessive amounts, is not everything.
