Historia
Best-selling author Simon Winchester writes a magnificent history of the pioneering engineers who developed precision machinery to allow us to see as far as the moon and as close as the Higgs boson. Precision is the key to everything. It is an integral, unchallenged and essential component of our modern social, mercantile, scientific, mechanical and intellectual landscapes. The items we value in our daily lives - a camera, a phone, a computer, a bicycle, a car, a dishwasher perhaps - all sport components that fit together with precision and operate with near perfection....

Consumable Engineering. Excellent!

Satisfying when the author has the right speaking voice for his own body. Fascinating on both personal (anecdotal) and sweep of history levels. Well researched, nicely structured, well paced. I enjoyed this greatly - and furnished my mind in the process.

Historia
The world at the beginning of the 20th century seemed for most of its inhabitants stable and relatively benign. Globalising, booming economies married to technological breakthroughs seemed to promise a better world for most people. Instead the 20th century proved to be overwhelmingly the most violent, frightening and brutalised in history, with fanatical, often genocidal warfare engulfing most societies between the outbreak of the First World War and the end of the Cold War. What went wrong?

Excellent book. Insightful but not hysterical.

I loved the book but the reader was very irritating. I speeded the delivery to 1.25* and that actually helped a lot.

Historia
Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he's alive - and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plainold "human error" are much more likely to kill him first.

My book of the year - no question!
Revisado: 10-12-17
I’m a bit surprised that this book is so widely popular. Not because it isn’t brilliant, thought provoking, thrilling and uplifting (it is all those things) but because the hero sees every catastrophe as a personal challenge then uses his knowledge, expertise and experience to develop a practical response.
A real antidote to today’s pervasive victim culture. Never needing counselling or a hand out from Mummy, our hero just gets on and does his amazingly self reliant thing.

Historia
In teeming Victorian London, where lavish wealth and appalling poverty live side by side, Edward Pierce charms the most prominent of the well-to-do as he cunningly orchestrates the crime of the century. Who would suspect that a gentleman of breeding could mastermind the daring theft of a fortune in gold? Who could predict the consequences of making the extraordinary robbery aboard the pride of England's industrial era, the mighty steam locomotive?

Evocative of Victorian England
Revisado: 10-12-17
A great true crime story. Very Moriarty, and very evocative of Sherlock Holmes’ England. Kitchen has a rather abrupt delivery which is a bit odd, but once you get used to it, his voice and the cadences of his speech, enrich Crichton’s words.
Loved it.

Thought provoking
Revisado: 04-07-17
Loved this when I first read it in 1993. Has stood the test of time remarkably well. Japan does not loom so large today, but China, Korea have, in part, replaced them. More interesting is the parallel with today's means of shooting our society in the foot in the name of a quest for an idealized globalized world. Much to ponder if you listen to this with a wide open mind.
Ripping yarn too, of course.

I just hated this from the beginning. I gave it 45 minutes of my life which, sadly, I'll never get back.

Historia
The story opens with the apparently accidental drowning of a sixth form student in the Norfolk countryside. As a matter of routine, or so it seems, the case passes across the desk of Detective Sergeant Smith, recently returned to work after an internal investigation into another case that has led to tensions between officers at Kings Lake police headquarters. As an ex-DCI, Smith could have retired by now, and it is clear that some of his superiors wish that he would do so.

New author to me.
Revisado: 02-22-17
A fine and, in a low key sort of way, novel voice in detective fiction. Gentle but insistent and complex rhythm and a compelling story. Most importantly, characters you love to have a beer with.
I'm pleased to have stumbled upon this series.

It's not easy to make a digital world believable as time passes and what's possible (an impossible) seems to oscillate. Pretty good job done IMHO

Classic work beautifully performed
Revisado: 07-06-16
The Hornblower stories are historically accurate in context and ripping yarns. This performance brings the logically first (though later written) Hornblower story to life ands adds to its appeal.
I'm a long time Hornblower fan, the impetus to now hear the story told is impossible to resist. Lt Hornblower is next. Yippee!

I've done some stupid things in my time. I've been reckless. I've broken a few rules. But never before have I ruined so many lives or left such a trail of destruction behind me. As Max would be the first to admit, she's never been one for rules. They tend to happen to other people. But this time she's gone too far, and everyone is paying the price. Grounded until the end of time, how can she ever put things right?

I came across Jodi Taylor by lucky chance and have devoured the St Mary's series. Improved by Zara Ramm - though her pronunciation of some historical figures' names etc could use some attention - who simply IS Max. Summer special out when?
