Historia
On the eve of the Nazi occupation, in the heart of Brussels, life for the residents of 33 Place Brugmann is about to change forever. Charlotte Sauvin, an art student raised by her beloved architect father in apartment 4L, knows all the details of the building and its people: how light falls on wood floors and voices echo off the marble staircase, the distinct knock of her dear friend, Julian Raphaël, the son of the art dealer’s family across the hall. Then the Raphaëls disappear, leaving everything behind but their priceless art collection, which has simply vanished.

A wonderful book
Revisado: 04-12-25
The author took a deep look into how the Nazi occupation would affect each resident. What would each do? The book made me ask what I would do. I am reading it a second time.

Historia
Mairéad works all hours in a run-down West End theatre’s wardrobe department, her whole existence made up of threads and needles, running errands to mend shoes, fixing broken zips and handwashing underwear. She must also do her best to avoid groping hands backstage and the terrible bullying of the show’s producer. But, despite her skill and growing experience, half of Mairéad remains in her windy, hedge-filled home in Ireland, and the life she abandoned there. In noughties London, she has the potential to be somebody completely new – why, then, does she feel so stuck?

My review of the wardrobe department
Revisado: 02-28-25
Elaine Garvey has written a book about a young woman, Mairead, making her way in a world where she is learning to value herself in spite of how she is devalued. The theatre where she works and a family funeral are well-described. The narrator in the audible version infuses the protagonist's voice with struggle. This is a good book and I recommend it.

Historia
Cloistered takes the listener deep into the hidden world of a traditional Carmelite monastery as it approaches the third Millennium and tells the story of an intense personal journey into and out of an enclosed life of poverty, chastity, and obedience. Finding an apparently perfect world at Akenside Priory, in Northumberland, Catherine trusts herself to a group of twenty silent women, believing she is trusting herself to God. As the beauty and mystery of an ancient way of life enfold her, she surrenders herself wholly to its power, quite unaware of the complexity and dangers that lie ahead.

Beautiful book
Revisado: 04-23-24
Catherine Cold stream has written Cloistered, a deeply personal and beautiful book about her years as a Carmelite nun. Her relationship with the God she believes in becomes a challenge, as does her relationship with the Order she has joined. This is a very human story where people, including nuns, act as people do. I highly recommend this book.

A delightful read

I enjoyed this book, finding it delightful. One woman builds a life and another woman rebuilds her own. I appreciated that the ending was different than I thought it would be.

Historia
In the summer of 1943, Eva Brunner is taking photographs of Nazi-looted art hidden in the salt mines of the Austrian hinterland. Across the ocean in Connecticut, Josephine Evans is working as a humble typist at the Yale Art Gallery. When both women are called to Italy to contribute to the war effort, neither imagines she will hold the fate of some of the world’s greatest masterpieces torn from the Uffizi Galleries and other Florentine art collections in her hands.

Review of The Last Masterpiece
Revisado: 08-08-23
Laura Morelli has written a historical novel about the hiding and unhiding of Italian masterpieces during WWII. This is an excellent book in which the story is told from numerous points of view, some of which clash. A reader will also find interpretations of why art is of paramount importance to a culture. I felt like I was there, amidst the mud and the glory. The narrators are great! I highly recommend this book.

This book is worth the read. We see the life of a 1970’s activist engaged in a gripping political battle. Politics are explained clearly. I enjoyed the art discussion, too. Great narrator.
