Excellent historical analysis and comparisons. Trump’s actions and propaganda personify the profile of a strongman. Violence and hate is not only patriotic it’s morally righteousness. Trump is a hero & victim. Didn’t like the reader but message is an a warning of what is upon us.

Historia
When Peter Canning started work as a paramedic on the streets of Hartford, Connecticut, 25 years ago, he believed drug users were victims only of their own character flaws. Although he took care of them, he did not care for them. But as the overdoses escalated, Canning began asking his patients how they had gotten started on their perilous journeys. And while no two tales were the same, their heartrending similarities changed Canning's view and moved him to educate himself about the science of addiction.

In 1770, the fuse of revolution is lit by a fateful command - “Fire!” - as England’s peacekeeping mission ignites into the Boston Massacre. The senseless killing of civilians leads to a tumultuous trial in which lawyer John Adams must defend the very enemy who has assaulted and abused the laws he holds sacred. The taut courtroom drama soon broadens into a stunning epic of war as King George III leads a reckless and corrupt government in London toward the escalating abuse of his colonies.

Historia
The Goldfinch is a haunted odyssey through present-day America and a drama of enthralling force and acuity. It begins with a boy. Theo Decker, a 13-year-old New Yorker, miraculously survives an accident that kills his mother. Abandoned by his father, Theo is taken in by the family of a wealthy friend. Bewildered by his strange new home on Park Avenue, disturbed by schoolmates who don't know how to talk to him, and tormented above all by his unbearable longing for his mother, he clings to one thing that reminds him of her: a small, mysteriously captivating painting that ultimately draws Theo into the underworld of art.

Loved this book!
Revisado: 12-01-19
Great story of loss, friendship, love in its many forms, generosity in its many forms/motives, One sees things that happen everyday, yet never realized what a child experiences. The book is packed full of emotion and the varied aspects of what seems one getting on with life. I especially enjoy books where l learn a lot also. The artworld is the forefront, but as the story unfolds one learns about so much more. The author is brilliantly descriptive, he makes you "feel" each experience as if it is your own.

A Cult of Personality & Crimes Against Humaninity
Revisado: 09-23-16
Would you listen to Mao again? Why?
Yes, I am sure I missed many important points so looking to a second go at this book. I have heard this the facts of the book are questionable but I tend to disagree. Mao's selfish motives are consistent with with the dictators of this time. Fear and terror is their favorite tool of control. Their personal ( very sick) goals leave millions upon millions dead in their wake. Murderous purges of any kind are the norm of those who build a cult of personality. Hidden behind the supposed "savior" image were very sick men, all power hungry, narcissistic, manipulative and loyal to no one but themselves. Stalin said "The death of one man is a tragedy, the death of millions is a statistic." The"one life" bit is meaningless to these Machiavellian leaders as they create statistics that astound readers. Mao's statistics are unfathomable.
What other book might you compare Mao to and why?
Any biography of a leader where pictures and statues of the leader are abundant and used as propaganda to build a cult of personality describe the same sick man, Mao, however, is especially cruel, deceptive and manipulative. Its as if they innately follow the same recipe of leadership, the similarities are astounding, same man, same heinous methodology, different region of the world.
Have you listened to any of Robertson Dean’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
yes I have, consistent.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Impossible, much to long
Any additional comments?
learn how one sick man, in a position of power, will destroy millions of lives in multiple generations without one ounce of regret or remorse.

Historia
Catch-22 is set in the closing months of World War II, in an American bomber squadron on a small island off Italy. (He has decided to live forever, even if he has to die in the attempt.)

an insult
Revisado: 06-01-16
What disappointed you about Catch-22?
An antiwar book no doubt, but an insult to the thousands upon thousands of ordinary soldiers who took the war and their duty seriously. Additionally these written words are disparaging to a generation of extraordinary men. This book does its best to make those who participated in WWII look like a bunch of bumbling idiots. If one wants to read an antiwar book, try any of the true accounts, not this mockery. Reading the actual experiences of ordinary infantry men, pilots and their crew, as well as medical staff will put any rationally minded person "off" the glory of war.
Yes we get it, some men are motivated by personal interests, selfish gains or led by their inflated egos and yes unfortunately some men in positions of power are not qualified to have crucial responsibility for their underlings, but that is true in life and only exacerbated in times of war. The percentages are small but enough create an incredible amount of damage and waste. There is nothing funny or goofy about it. This book is as offensive and just plain rude.
Would you ever listen to anything by Joseph Heller again?
not if they are similar to this. I'm sure he received an unprecedented amount of hate mail.
Would you be willing to try another one of Jay O. Sanders’s performances?
the performance was fine, it was the story line that was absurd.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Catch-22?
I would not have published it.
Any additional comments?
Yes, a total waste of time and money. The fact that the author and publishers made money off this book is shameful.
