Strong female character and immersive world
Revisado: 04-02-25
This book snuck up and took me by surprise. I had never heard of it before, and I wasn't familiar with the author.
I loved the story and the world and the characters. The performance was excellent.
I appreciated that the characters were not whiney, and their interactions and dialogue felt natural and believable.
When I finished listening I bought another book by this author (The Ladies of the Secret Circus) because I enjoyed this title so much.
This is one of the rare audiobooks that I will listen to several times, because I want to spend more time with the characters in their world.

Historia
On November 6, 1860, Abraham Lincoln became the fluky victor in a tight race for president. The country was bitterly at odds; Southern extremists were moving ever closer to destroying the Union, with one state after another seceding and Lincoln powerless to stop them. Slavery fueled the conflict, but somehow the passions of North and South came to focus on a lonely federal fortress in Charleston Harbor: Fort Sumter.

Worth the wait
Revisado: 05-07-24
I pre-ordered this title, and then I felt like I waited forever!
As always, I enjoyed Erik Larson's research fleshing out the people who lived the history. I'm sad for the US that we just keep repeating the same mistakes that divide us.

Predictable, but fun horror story
Revisado: 02-28-24
I felt that the characters were well developed, and the story was interesting. It wasn't wildly innovative, but it's written well and fun to listen to! Narrator did well.

Fun twists and turns
Revisado: 02-28-24
A little predictable, but fun to listen to. I did not like the computer narration during conversation. It was hard sometimes to tell who was speaking, and the inflection didn't fit what was happening in the story.
Still worth the listen for free!

Entertaining

I enjoyed the atmosphere of this story. It wasn't anything super new and different, but the characters were believable and I liked the setting.
The narrator was wonderful.
