Historia
On May 1, 1915, with WWI entering its tenth month, a luxury ocean liner as richly appointed as an English country house sailed out of New York, bound for Liverpool, carrying a record number of children and infants. The passengers were surprisingly at ease, even though Germany had declared the seas around Britain to be a war zone. For months, German U-boats had brought terror to the North Atlantic.

Good book but not a fan of the narrator.
Revisado: 05-28-15
I thought the book was really interesting. If only Scott Brick wasn't the narrator. He drives me crazy and this is now at least the third book I have that he has narrated. I would have enjoyed the book better with someone else. Aside from that, it gave a really good look into the sinking of the Lusitania. I think it was well written - it may have been a better read in the book format.

A strange yet intriguing tale...
Revisado: 05-06-15
What did you love best about The Professor and the Madman?
Simply that it was unlike anything I ever read or really would think to read.
What other book might you compare The Professor and the Madman to and why?
I'd have to say, this is a pretty unique book. I can't compare it to anything else.
What about Simon Winchester’s performance did you like?
I always love it when the author read their own books. They usually give so much more emotion to their characters.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
the second half, yes!
Any additional comments?
I can honestly say when I started this book I thought it was boring. I was wondering why I even purchased it. But towards about the middle I was glued to it. Hang in there, its a good book, just dry in the beginning.

Historia
Near the end of World War II, thousands of Allied ex-POWs were abandoned to wander the war-torn Eastern Front. With no food, shelter, or supplies, they were an army of dying men. The Red Army had pushed the Nazis out of Russia. As they advanced across Poland, the prison camps of the Third Reich were discovered and liberated. In defiance of humanity, the freed Allied prisoners were discarded without aid.

A story of a real hero!
Revisado: 05-06-15
Would you listen to Beyond the Call again? Why?
Absolutely! The narrator was excellent - very engaging. The Story was that of a true hero. The book tells of all the atrocities of war but one man's mission to save as many POWs and refugees that he can during his mission. It was a very emotional ending, but you got to reall yknow Captain Trimble and fell like you were on the journey with him.
What other book might you compare Beyond the Call to and why?
I read "The Envoy" which was about a Swedish man who saved Jews during the war. Had the same feeling but a little difference kind of story.
Have you listened to any of Donald Corren’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
I have not listened to Donald Corren before but after this performance will see what other books he has read. Very enjoyable narrator.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I have listened to many WWII books, mainly about the holocaust so I was not surprised but the awful things that Captain Trimble witnessed. But I guess it never gets easier to hear of the cruelly humans have suffered. I cried at the end of this book. I don't want to give away too much but the part about the French medal is where it got emotional for me and then never ended...
Any additional comments?
A must read for anyone who enjoys stories of triumph and real war heroes. If you are an "Unbroken" fan, I think you'll like this one too.

Revisado: 03-25-15
I normally read nonfiction but have now read a few Steinbeck books. He has such a way of capturing the normal conversation between characters. This is a long book but just so well written then I really enjoyed it. The narrator was great also - had a different voice for every character.

Interesting, but not my favorite
Revisado: 03-25-15
Is there anything you would change about this book?
I found myself drifting a bit when listening. I think it was an alright book but didn't "capture" me like others. I actually had to replay the first hour because I had missed too many details.
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
I can't quite pin-point it. I loved the book about James A. Garfield - "Destiny of a Republic" - seemed to weave the facts into such a great story. I felt like this book could have been the same way with just a little different way of writing.
What three words best describe Arthur Morey’s performance?
Alright, neither loved nor hated the narration.
Did The President and the Assassin inspire you to do anything?
Since I live in Cleveland, Oh is was interesting to hear about the references to Cleveland and of course, Canton where McKinley lived (wife was from). I guess I was a little inspired to go back to the McKinley sites in Canton to visit again...

Learned a great deal about elephants
Revisado: 03-25-15
If you could sum up Elephant Company in three words, what would they be?
1. Inspirational
2. Unexpected
3. Thought-provoking
What did you like best about this story?
It was interesting to follow Jim from his early years with elephants where he was just discovering them up to the point where his is an expert. Amazing journey.
Which scene was your favorite?
The story about the blind and her son... so heartbreaking but makes you realize how smart these animals are.
Any additional comments?
I have a new respect for these creatures. I really recommend this book. As others have stated, only the last part is really about WWII but that didn't really affect my opinion about the book.

Delightful little tale
Revisado: 03-25-15
Would you consider the audio edition of Minding the Manor to be better than the print version?
I liked having it read to me - the narrator did a great job of convincing me she was Mollie!
What did you like best about this story?
I liked Mollie's spunk and her sense of adventure. I also enjoyed the ability to understand the daily routines of the downstairs staff in the 1930s.
What does Veida Dehmlow bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
She had an accent - I don't know British accents so I assume to be fairly authentic one - but nonetheless made the book entertaining and convincing.
Any additional comments?
I am so glad that Mollie wrote this memoir so as to not loose this this sort of history.

Story of one tough cookie!
Revisado: 10-22-14
If you could sum up Half Broke Horses in three words, what would they be?
A story of a truly unique girl/woman in the first part of the 20th century. She could do anything she put her mind to. I loved her attitude towards life.
What other book might you compare Half Broke Horses to and why?
An "unusual childhood", which is one of my all-time favorites. I would suggest that listen if you like this one.
Which character – as performed by Jeannette Walls – was your favorite?
Lily, of course. Her voice for Lily brought the character to life.

Revisado: 10-22-14
Would you consider the audio edition of The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society to be better than the print version?
I think I would not enjoy this book in a written format. It helped to have different characters read the letters.
If you could rename The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, what would you call it?
The title intrigues listeners - I would not change!
Any additional comments?
It was a cute story. I am usually a nonfiction person but liked the historical aspect so I decided to listen. I wouldn't say it was my favorite but it was a cute book.

Historia
In September, 1939, George Lucius Salton's boyhood in Tyczyn, Poland, was shattered by escalating violence and terror under German occupation. His father, a lawyer, was forbidden to work, but 11-year-old George dug potatoes, split wood, and resourcefully helped his family. They suffered hunger and deprivation, a forced march to the Rzeszow ghetto, then eternal separation when 14-year-old George and his brother were left behind to labor in work camps while their parents were deported in boxcars to die in Belzec. For the next three years, George slaved and barely survived in 10 concentration camps.

I could not stop listening!!!
Revisado: 10-22-14
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Such a heartbreaking story, but also a story of survival. I think we can learn a lot from these stories.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The 23rd Psalm?
I can't pinpoint just one. His choices were sort of a domino effect. You get to points in the book where you say to yourself, "wow, had he made one different decision he would not have survived". Its powerful.
What about Ken Kliban’s performance did you like?
He made me feel as though he was the author telling the story.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I cried in a few places in the book.
Any additional comments?
