When retired math teacher Grace Winters is left a run-down house on a Mediterranean island by a long-lost friend, curiosity gets the better of her. She arrives in Ibiza with a one-way ticket, no guidebook and no plan. Among the rugged hills and golden beaches of the island, Grace searches for answers about her friend’s life, and how it ended. What she uncovers is stranger than she could have dreamed. But to dive into this impossible truth, Grace must first come to terms with her past.

I wanted to like it, but it wasn't for me
Revisado: 10-21-24
I have enjoyed Matt Haig's previous novels, and wanted to enjoy this book, but had to force myself to finish it. I found the main character unlikable, and while I enjoy the narrator as an actress, she was doing a whispery type voice for the main character that didn't help me like her any better. The supernatural elements were fine, but the character's constant pity parties and reciting math theories were additional layers that grated on my nerves.
Listen to the preview and if you like it, enjoy the book. Otherwise, this might be better in print.

Historia
Emma London never thought she had anything in common with her grandmother Genevieve London. The regal old woman came from wealthy and bluest-blood New England stock, but that didn't protect her from life's cruelest blows. Genevieve rose from the ashes of grief and built a fashion empire that was respected the world over, even when it meant neglecting her other son. When Emma's own mother died, her father abandoned her on his mother's doorstep. Genevieve took Emma in and reluctantly raised her - until Emma got pregnant her senior year of high school.

An easy listen in the background
Revisado: 04-18-24
The story was good for background noise, as it's fairly shallow and repetitive. All real issues are wrapped up in a neat bow and there's little character development.
At one point the audio book pauses, you hear the turning of pages, and the book resumes.
Good for when you want a story but are focusing on other things.

A good story, but repetitive and contrived
Revisado: 01-22-24
I picked this up on the recommendation of a friend. The story jumps back and forth between the historical apothecary and current day woman. Their stories are parallel and repetitive. I have never been a big fan of characters whose sole obsession in life is having children; I tend to find them a little bit one-sided and contrived. If you like stories about women who have been wronged and seek revenge, this is a great story for you. If you like stories where women lament that their life mission is not fulfilled because they've not had children, this is a good story for you. I am sure that for the right reader this is a great book, it just wasn't the right book for me. I will say, that the narration is excellent! The accents and differentiation are very good and it was enjoyable to listen to you, even when the story was a little bit grating.

Four months have passed since the shadow stone fell into Kell's possession. Four months since his path crossed with Delilah Bard. Four months since Rhy was wounded and the Dane twins fell, and the stone was cast with Holland's dying body through the rift, and into Black London. In many ways, things have almost returned to normal, though Rhy is more sober, and Kell is now plagued by his guilt.

Frustrated by narration & recaps
Revisado: 07-05-23
I loved the first book and downloaded the second right away. While there are two narrators, both seem to struggle with accents and differentiating the characters. They story is good, but it's full of recaps and and on a cliffhanger for the next book instead of being a stand alone story. I will listen to the next book in spite of this.

Historia
Frida Kahlo was ahead of her time. She was bisexual and would have fit in perfectly in the time we live in now. Her disabilities would be acceptable in our society of today and her husband, Diego would probably be run out of town by the Real Housewives of “Cheaters”. Frida came with a lot of baggage in her life starting when she was only six years old and even more baggage piled on when she was in high school. Her suffering was more than anyone can imagine but she kept her head held high and forged her way forward.

Like others have said, it's poorly written
Revisado: 06-14-23
I chose this title because I wanted some info on Frida Kahlo and it was an hour or so long. However, after the first 15 minutes, I had to stop listening. I went back for another 15 minutes but couldn't bring myself to finish. The writing is mediocre and juvenile and reads like a list of facts poorly strung together with no coherent story. Speculation runs rampant and much of the "story" includes her family and not her. Please pick a different book.

So good!
Revisado: 08-27-19
I don't normally enjoy a mystery or thriller, but after reading such wonderful reviews of Whisper Man I had to give it a try (and I'm glad I did). The suspense runs throughout the story and is told wonderfully from several characters points of view. While it leaves room for a sequel, I don't expect that we will see one.

An okay story for casual listening
Revisado: 08-03-19
This book was very average, easy to listen to in the background, with a story that wrapped up neatly. No challenging characters or big ideas, more of a summer fluff piece. I don't think I'll remember the story very long, but that's okay too. No hard feelings toward the book or author but nothing remarkable either. Just casual and easy.

A Trite and Predictable Religious Allegory
Revisado: 04-23-19
Ugh. It started well enough but ultimately I stopped and started this story about 4 times over three months.
It's a readers theater of one dimensional characters with no depth and comically simple resolutions are offered to each "problem" encountered.
Dull vocabulary and oddly dated and upsetting stereotypes. Thank goodness Stanley Tucci is enjoyable because it's the most redeeming quality.
