Weak, weak story. Barrington is boring and predictable. Do not bother reading or listening unless you are just a totally avid Woods or Barrington fan.

How good is the performer/narrator? Originally I bought the print version of the book and so missed her performance I bought the audio version. Her Peabody character is simply wonderful.

The book? Decent but not as good as the other books in the series. This one centers around the good of Roarke/Dallas against the forces of evil personified as two gangs. The evil characters are simply one dimensional and completely predictable in their actions and reactions. With that negative out of the way, I will admit that I will purchase the next in the series.

Well written, good characterizations, a great Planet of the Apes twist. While I loved the twist, it is inconsistent with much of the action. But, that is nit-picking. I enjoyed the ride and recommend it.

Great Characters, Excellent Plot Not for Everyone

I haven't read any reviews but I will bet my bottom dollar that the word "gritty" is used dozens of times. If you are easily offended by four letter words and racial slurs, stay away from the book. But, if you want a damn good story with really excellent characterizations, give this book a try. If you aren't squeamish you will enjoy this offbeat book. My only negative is that I still don't understand the symbiotic relationship of the two main characters. I would love to talk with the author and get into his head on their relationship.

On So Many Levels Just a Waste

This book takes science "fact" to a whole new level of absurd. Without giving away the plot, the action takes place in the near future where a technological super-scientist perfects -- well -- virtually everything. He creates, of all things, immortality along the way. The only thing that I found entertaining in this book were the unintentionally funny metaphors. Some books are page turners; this might be a page burner. With apologies to the author, don't bother.

My credulity was strained in so many ways from the heist, to the choice of the undercover agent, to the transport of the manuscripts. But, overall, if someone tells me that a new book has the flow and twists of Camino Island I would likely read it/listen to it. I think what made me finish the book was the performance which was first rate.

A Flawed But Enjoyable "Read"

This is one of those books which could have been great instead of just being very good. The book tells an intriguing story which carefully builds the suspense from a difficult case for Jack to an almost impossible one. What mitigates against this book are several major factual and legal errors which are glaring. I am a lawyer but I asked my wife (a non-lawyer) to read the book and she came away with the same factual and legal problems that I saw. I really do not want to give away the book but the issues relate to the pretrial disclosures, a pivotal deposition and just plain inconsistent chronologies. The mistakes made the “willing suspension of disbelief” very difficult. Having said all of that, I still recommend the book and the performance. Both are top drawer.

Good Listen, Too Many Coincidences, But Worth It

First the book: The story is completely far-fetched. But, that's okay. If you have read Mr. Baldacci before, then you know to expect the many unlikely coincidences he loves [like Robert just "happened" to have secreted a make-up kit before he is sentenced to life in prison in an escape proof prison (which of course is the location of the escape)]. Having said that, if you like Baldacci you will enjoy the book. Yeah, the male characters are a bit one dimensional, but again worth it. Now the performances: Either narrator standing alone is decent to good, but alternating voices is just distracting as are the gratuitous sound-effects of guns being fired and wheels squealing. Obviously, I am in the minority, but I just do not like to hear two narrators and the sound-effects detract from the overall impact of the experience.

Sadly Predictable Story Sharply Defined Characters

The story is as old as the campfire. Romeo and Juliet in the person of Hanna and David, a Palestinian and a Jew each carrying his or her own ethnic and religious baggage. Mr. Patterson pulls at us to understand the plight of the Palestinians while tipping his cap to the two thousand years of pogroms directed at the Jews. In the end the characters are extraordinarily sharply drawn and completely realized. Without giving away too much, the denouement is never really in doubt and sadly predictable. I enjoyed the characterizations in the first half of the book, though David was a bit of cliché. You will see the end coming from the very publisher's blurb. Still the writing was excellent. I am on the fence whether I would recommend it.

Normally, I enjoy Mr. Rollins for what he is -- a good and believable storyteller. It is the adjective that fails miserably in this story. Usually I can suspend disbelief with the best of them. Heck, I enjoy science fiction, fantasy, historical novels and just about every genre there is. But this book just never works for me. You can only pile too many impossible events together until the whole story dissolves into an unintentional black comedy. I will note one scene (spoiler alert) to illustrate my point. Two Sigma operatives join forces with an underworld assassin and a Chinese Triad to raid a North Korean Prison Camp. Huh? I got the feeling that Mr. Rollins was never sure whether he was writing sci-fi, adventure or history. In the end, it just does not work.
