Excellent worldbuilding and engaging main character. I had a little trouble keeping everyone else clear without a written Dramatis Personae to reference.
the only blemish is that the writing can be a bit too YA, too modern. if you can get beyond that, it is a terrific read, if not it will pull you out of the story.
The narrator was simply perfect.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I would not recommend the book to a friend. It is over-wrought and exasperating. This book is a version of Hamlet and despite the flowery language it does not live up to the original.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

I don't think the book would do well as a movie. the strength of the story is the narrator and to re-create it in a movie would require too much voice-over

well written and tender, John Green does what he does so we'll. the characters are well written and round the story is tender and real. the narrator does a simply amazing job. if you're a fan of these kinds of young adult books you will love this one.

somehow Ian McEwan manages to make a spy thriller boring.
The prose is excellent and the descriptions of people and places are evocative. The characters are fully realises and complex.
the problem is the pacing overall arc. I was left bored and impatient for a climax that never fully arrives.
the reader was superb, the perfect voice to go with the narrator.

The story is surreal and all too possible. the nightmare state of the world is taken from different parts of history and presented in such a close and intimate way that you feel what the narrator feels. this book is an instructive lesson in fundamentalism gone wrong written in an all too familiar Western idiom.
Claire Danes narrates with wistfulness and vulnerability that fits the narrator perfectly.

this book is really like nothing I've ever read. classic, modern, meta, rude, and brilliant.

this isn't the most thoughtful novel but it is tons of fun and very imaginative.
