Historia
Superintelligence asks the questions: What happens when machines surpass humans in general intelligence? Will artificial agents save or destroy us? Nick Bostrom lays the foundation for understanding the future of humanity and intelligent life. The human brain has some capabilities that the brains of other animals lack. It is to these distinctive capabilities that our species owes its dominant position. If machine brains surpassed human brains in general intelligence, then this new superintelligence could become extremely powerful - possibly beyond our control.

Fiction masquerading as non-fiction.

So many conclusions based on so few facts. Speculation about the future does not make a convincing argument.

Historia
Life on the Waller plantation is harsh and bleak. Twelve-year-old Sarny knows that it won’t be long before she will be forced to leave Mammy and join the other young women who serve the master’s household as breeders. Then one day a new slave arrives, bought from an overseer for a thousand dollars. He comes in a bad way, walking in front of the horses and Waller’s ready whip. His back is covered with scars as thick as Sarny’s hand, but he holds his head high.

Historia
For much of his life, historian Howard Zinn chronicled American history from the bottom up, throwing out the official version taught in schools - with its emphasis on great men in high places - to focus on the street, the home, and the workplace. Known for its lively, clear prose as well as its scholarly research, A People's History of the United States is the only volume to tell America's story from the point of view of - and in the words of - America's women, factory workers, African-Americans, Native Americans, the working poor, and immigrant laborers.

Unabashedly, unapologetically polemic
Revisado: 04-15-16
No matter your personal political opinions, surely you can, at the very least, appreciate that this account of US history doesn't attempt to sway your opinion by underhandedly ignoring some facts. Zinn overtly states he is ignoring some facts. All history books do, there are too many facts for any one history book to include. Moreover, Zinn states why: to inspire a political consciousness of the lower and middle classes against the upper classes.
If you disagree with Zinn, then you disagree. Inasmuch as Zinn gets the facts he does include correct, this book ought to be regarded as beneficial. The facts he presents are extremely important to know, to learn from. My research into historians' opinions on Zinn's treatment of the facts (a task that isn't exactly trivial in itself for this non-historian) leads me to believe there is room for Zinn to have included facts which, though detrimental to a given point, would make his case more compelling overall. Hence my 4 stars.
"A People's History of the United States" is an important read for anyone from the middle and lower classes of society, whatever their political leanings.

Historia
Under the aegis of machine learning in our data-driven machine age, computers are programming themselves and learning about - and solving - an extraordinary range of problems, from the mundane to the most daunting. Today it is machine learning programs that enable Amazon and Netflix to predict what users will like, Apple to power Siri's ability to understand voices, and Google to pilot cars.

A lay of the land.

I like the overview of the current state of the art of Machine Learning. I do not care for the hand waving dismissals of people like Chomsky at the beginning or the handwaving dismissal of some of the ethical issues at the end. The pace of the speech was very slow and plodding. But I used the app to speed it up 1.5x and it was mostly fine.
