Historia
When Jonathan Argyll is arrested for breaking into an obscure church in Rome, he claims that it contains a long-lost Raphael hidden under a painting by Mantini. The painting disappears - then reappears in the hands of the top British art dealer, Edward Byrnes. How has Byrnes found out about the hidden masterpiece, and whom is he acting for? There is also the curious matter of the safe deposit box full of sketches closely resembling features of the newly discovered painting.

Solid Story, Great Performance.
Revisado: 05-12-23
Really enjoyable. Iain Pears does a terrific job, especially for a first-time writer of fiction. And with his own background as an art history professional, it’s no wonder he gets the art and history both right. A bit short, and would have enjoyed a bit more development of the characters, but Pears has every right to be proud of his rookie effort.

Moffatt & McKenzie Shine!
Revisado: 03-23-20
John Moffatt (Hercule Poirot) and Julia McKenzie (Ariadne Oliver) truly shine in this BBC Radio adaptation of the Agatha Christie novel.
For that matter there has never been a better Poirot than Moffatt, who inhabits the role in a number of BBC Radio productions. He and McKenzie help raise the production above the slight source material.

Historia
Sir Claud Amory's formula for a powerful new explosive has been stolen, presumably by a member of his large household. Sir Claud assembles his suspects in the library and locks the door, instructing them that the when the lights go out, the formula must be replaced on the table - and no questions will be asked. But when the lights come on, Sir Claud is dead. Now Hercule Poirot, assisted by Captain Hastings and Inspector Japp, must unravel a tangle of family feuds, old flames, and suspicious foreigners to find the killer and prevent a global catastrophe.

Moffat's Performance Makes It Better
Revisado: 02-04-20
John Moffatt, perhaps best known for portraying Poirot in BBC Radio adaptations of Christie's original work, makes this mediocre plot come alive with a terrific reading.

Historia
Dashiell Hammett’s The Maltese Falcon, first serialized in a magazine in 1930, is best known through the iconic Humphrey Bogart film of 1941. But it was the book that created the classic "noir" genre with its tough private detective threading his cool way between the criminals and the law. Sam Spade, the private eye solving the mystery of the Maltese statuette, was the template for Philip Marlowe and a host of others…. but they come no more shrewd and cunning with Hammett peppering the text with one-liners.

Meyers' reading makes a great book come alive
Revisado: 02-02-20
Loved the book when I read it before. It's an American classic, and Hammett has a place alongside the likes of Hemingway. Fitzgerald and Dos Passos as a writer who helped define the modern American voice during the 1920s. For this audio version Meyers did a masterful job of setting the scene and bringing each of Hammett's sharply drawn, fully realized characters vividly to life with his wonderful reading. Recommend this version without qualification or reservation!

Ruso and Tilla's excitement at arriving in Rome with their new baby daughter is soon dulled by their discovery that the grand facades of polished marble mask an underworld of corrupt landlords and vermin-infested tenements. There are also far too many doctors - some skilled - but others positively dangerous.

Wasn't sure about moving the action to Rome, but boy did it work. Great book! Simon Vince's superb narration did nothing but add to the enjoyment of it.

Revisado: 09-26-15
All of the BBC adaptations of Chandler ' s canon of Marlowe novels are riveting and well worth a listen. The cast us in fine voice, their American accents believable. I felt transported to 1940s Los Angeles!
