Superb performance, excellent book
Revisado: 08-04-15
I would love to have Shohreh Aghdashloo read anything at all to me, but the fact that she had such an expansive, meaningful tale to read made this a wonderful experience. The protagonist captured my heart and beat it up along the way. It was difficult watching her through so much pain, watching her through each mistake and through each betrayal. I loved her character and her relentlessness. What a wonderful heroine.

Historia
An historic literary event: the publication of a newly discovered novel, the earliest known work from Harper Lee, the beloved, best-selling author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning classic To Kill a Mockingbird. Originally written in the mid-1950s, Go Set a Watchman was the novel Harper Lee first submitted to her publishers before To Kill a Mockingbird. Assumed to have been lost, the manuscript was discovered in late 2014.

To Kill A Mockingbird vs Go Set A Watchman

Glad this manuscript was rejected. Glad I read it.
Revisado: 07-21-15
I'm glad that this manuscript was rejected. It forced the author to think more deeply about themes that she wished to explore. Watchman explores many of the same themes as Mockingbird, but her analysis was more shallow, more grounded in time and space (60's southern attitudes). Mockingbird emerged a better-thought exploration of racial issues that helped to shape and educate a generation. The rejection of this manuscript helped her to create the timeless masterpiece of Mockingbird.
Watchman alone would have added very little to America's social conscience. But reading Mockingbird first and then Watchman helped to illustrate the education of the author who in turn touched so many of our lives.
Having said that, Watchman was delightfully told through most of the book. Scout is adorable, her interactions fun, the flavor for small town South through much of the book is wonderful.
To Ms. Witherspoon, bravo. You performed this to perfection.

Historia
The number one New York Times best-selling story about American Olympic triumph in Nazi Germany, the inspiration for the PBS documentary The Boys of '36, broadcast to coincide with the 2016 Summer Olympics and the 80th anniversary of the boys' gold medal race. Out of the depths of the Depression comes an irresistible story about beating the odds and finding hope in the most desperate of times - the improbable, intimate account of how nine working-class boys from the American West showed the world at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin what true grit really meant.

A fist pumping listen
Revisado: 04-28-15
There were times listening to this book that I found myself shooting my fist in the air, sharing in the triumphs. Mr. Brown is a wonderful storyteller, and what a story to tell. The narrator was superb. All in all, this is one of the finest books I have ever heard.

Historia
Given the importance of what they do, and the controversies that often surround them, and the violent people they sometimes confront, it is remarkable that in the history of this country only four active federal judges have been murdered. Judge Raymond Fawcett has just become number five.... Nothing is as it seems and everything’s fair game in this wickedly clever new novel from John Grisham, the undisputed master of the legal thriller.

Why do I keep thinking his books will get better?
Revisado: 02-26-15
Not one of his finer works. Plot holes, lazy writing and an unsatisfying end. He makes a major plot deviation without giving the reader any heads up as to why until the very end. It just didn't work for me.

a very so-so book
Revisado: 01-23-15
I really wanted to like this book. The NYT and LAT reviews got me interested. The characters were two-dimensional, the protagonist was preachy about the superiority of her world views relative to the world views around her, and people fit too easily into prearranged categories.

This book completely drew me in. I became part of the family, the drama, the smells, the smiles. Neil Shah delivered an incredible performance, nimbly dancing between Indian accents, French accents and so much more. I will look for more books read by him. Wonderful experience.

I love this book and am haunted by its implications. This is a hell that seems real and is motivating. An eternity of monotony, limitations and a death of expectation would indeed be hell.

Historia
Seth Hubbard is a wealthy man dying of lung cancer. He trusts no one. Before he hangs himself from a sycamore tree, Hubbard leaves a new, handwritten, will. It is an act that drags his adult children, his Black maid, and Jake into a conflict as riveting and dramatic as the murder trial that made Brigance one of Ford County's most notorious citizens, just three years earlier. The second will raises far more questions than it answers. Why would Hubbard leave nearly all of his fortune to his maid? Had chemotherapy and painkillers affected his ability to think clearly?

Great narration. Pretty Good Grisham
Revisado: 01-02-14
I loved Time to Kill, and thought it was one of the author's best works. This book was not as enjoyable maybe for a couple of reasons. The lawyering by the protagonist was not great in this book and the ending was predictable, but as Grisham endings go, this was far less choppy. Michael Beck's narration was brilliant.

One of the finest audio productions in the library
Revisado: 11-13-13
I have listened to the original recording and seen the movie. I wondered if I would be bored by the audio play but the free chapters convinced me. I am now officially a huge fan of the audio play. Card wrote a great script and the performers were just outstanding. My only complaint is that I got very little work done until this recording was finished.
Bravo! Encore!
