Historia
Institutes of the Christian Religion is John Calvin's seminal work on Protestant systematic theology. Highly influential in the Western world and still widely read by theological students today, it was published in Latin in 1536 and in his native French in 1541. The book serves as an introductory textbook on the Protestant faith for those with some previous knowledge of theology and covers a broad range of theological topics from the doctrines of church and sacraments to justification by faith alone and Christian liberty.

Withering Critique of Catholic Teachings
Revisado: 01-11-23
This read like a hit piece over 60 hours long. John Calvin offers biting critiques. The reader did a great job of coming across with a commanding intellectual tone with just the right amount of condescension.
I listened to the whole thing, and I look forward to listening to it again in a few months or years. Calvin is one of the most important thinkers of the last 500 years. So, it was good to hear what he actually wrote versus what others may say about his writings.

Historia
The Texas Rangers came to life in 1823, when Texas was still part of Mexico. Nearly 200 years later, the Rangers are still going - one of the most famous of all law enforcement agencies. In Cult of Glory, Doug J. Swanson has written a sweeping account of the Rangers that chronicles their epic, daring escapades while showing how the white and propertied power structures of Texas used them as enforcers, protectors, and officially sanctioned killers.

This was a great presentation of Texas history. The legacy of the Rangers is intertwined with that of the state.

Apples to Pears
Revisado: 04-19-22
Instead of comparing the People's Republic of China to the United States of America, he compares Chinese civilization to the United States of America. Doing this, he asserts that the PRC is the rising power and the USA is the declining power.
Had he compared Western civilization to Chinese civilization or the PRC to the USA, I would have rated this better. He needs to address the critiques of the declining offered by Michael Beckley in his book Unrivaled or any of the books by Peter Zeihan.
It was worth a read as long as you haven't already read Kishore Mahubani. They make similar arguments for the supposed decline of the USA.

A worthwhile "big-history" survey
- De Acteon en 11-22-13
interesting and informative.
Revisado: 09-11-16
I liked the approach of following the influence of political philosophies across the centuries. I was surprised by the emphasis given to the changing status of wonen and thw poor in the region.
The narration was not engaging. It was good enough, though. the content were not interesting to me, I would be disappointed. However , the value if the content superceded the narration.
