Historia
More than 15 years after the events of The Handmaid's Tale, the theocratic regime of the Republic of Gilead maintains its grip on power, but there are signs it is beginning to rot from within. At this crucial moment, the lives of three radically different women converge, with potentially explosive results. Two have grown up as part of the first generation to come of age in the new order. The testimonies of these two young women are joined by a third: Aunt Lydia. Her complex past and uncertain future unfold in surprising and pivotal ways.

Terrifying parallels to current affairs
Revisado: 04-09-25
Absolutely couldn’t put it down. The character development and description of the geography and fictional histories of the United States and Canada in this book made the parallels absolutely impossible to miss. Highly recommended!

As the child of refugees of World War II Europe and a renowned philosopher and scholar of propaganda, Jason Stanley has a deep understanding of how democratic societies can be vulnerable to fascism: Nations don’t have to be fascist to suffer from fascist politics. In fact, fascism’s roots have been present in the United States for more than a century.

Chilling
Revisado: 02-12-25
When I see where we are already in February 2025 following the Nov 2024 US election I am absolutely horrified. Honestly this book came along at a good time. I had always had an idea what fascism was but never fully understood what underpins it and the goals of it until now. I’m absolutely grieving for my country right now and scared for vulnerable populations already being impacted by Trump’s project 2025 directed hard fall off a cliff from a backsliding representative democracy to an authoritarian fascist power grab. I use the word representative very loosely as we have NEVER had a truly representative democracy because of the very long history of gerrymandering by the GOP and the many unfair practices written in to laws that heavily diluted black and other minority representation in our country starting with reconstruction and continuing to this day with refusal to admit territories or the District of Columbia as states because of the desire not to represent the minority voices and interests that predominate in these areas. We should all be equally concerned as I am at seeing all of the history websites for historical attractions in the US being “white” washed to minimize the telling of the truthful history of slavery in the US that ranges from the insulting and false assertion that slavery helped black people in the US because they learned skills to the lack of complexity of the historical tellings of the US revolution. This is horrible. I allowed myself to think that what happened in Germany during WWII could never happen here. I used to be a republican because I always watched Fox News and then after 2016 I couldn’t miss the our and proud bigotry and antisemitism of the GOP as MAGA took it over and all of the more moderate GOP congress people left politics because they were forced out as this movement steam rolled through the GOP. I never realized that fascism had always been here but has now accelerated following a long and patient effort on the right to fill long term govt and appointed positions in courts and local govts with MAGA loyalists who

Ingrassia lost his mother, two sisters, brother, and nephew to cancer—different cancers developing at different points throughout their lives. And while highly unusual, his family is not the only one to wonder whether their heartbreak is the result of unbelievable bad luck, or if there might be another explanation. Through meticulous research and riveting storytelling, Ingrassia takes us from the 1960s—when Dr. Frederick Pei Li and Dr. Joseph Fraumeni Jr. first met, not yet knowing that they would help make a groundbreaking discovery that would affect cancer patients for decades to come.

I am an oncology nurse practitioner and the nerd in me adores a good biomedical documentary. This is more than that, it is an odyssey, and from the moment I started it, I could not put it down. The writing is also at a level that is understandable for people without backgrounds in science, nursing or medicine.
The history of the discovery of this particularly brutal heritable cancer syndrome is absolutely fascinating and Lawrence Engrassia skillfully weaves this together with stories from the initial families studied to ascertain the cause of the syndrome with stories of his own family. The details of these families repeated suffering as family member after family member is torn from them will forever be indelibly seared into my memory.

Bounty hunter Stephanie Plum is back, packing a whole lot of attitude. This time around, she's on the trail of Kenny Mancuso, a boy from the working-class burg of Trenton, New Jersey, who has just shot his best friend. Fresh out of the Army and suspiciously wealthy, Mancuso's also distantly related to Joe Morelli, a vice cop with questionable ethics, a libido in permanent overdrive, and a habit of horning in on Stephanie's investigations.

Historia
The Emperor of All Maladies reveals the many faces of an iconic, shape-shifting disease that is the defining plague of our generation. The story of cancer is a story of human ingenuity, resilience, and perseverance but also of hubris, arrogance, paternalism, and misperception, all leveraged against a disease that, just three decades ago, was thought to be easily vanquished in an all-out "war against cancer".

Skillful and talented author
Revisado: 02-02-23
I have a love for biomedical science related books and Sidhartha Mukherjee has to be one of the most talented and riveting authors to read from. His skill of teaching through story telling is masterful and make learning and listening a joy for me. The Emperor of all Maladies is one of my favorite books about cancer and as an oncology nurse practitioner and someone who has worked in cancer care in one form or another since the mid-1990s, I anxiously await any updates Dr. Mukherjee might make to this book and any others he might write for I am ready to hungrily devour it!

Talented author so enjoyable to read. Excellent narrator as well
Revisado: 01-17-23
Dr. Siddhartha Mukherjee is a talented and knowledgeable author. Well researched material that is organized well. His ability to write about history and science through relatable stories as though told by direct witnesses to the history make the material all the more relatable to a lay audience. It is always an immense pleasure to read his work. I absolutely adore his writing style and will always happily and hungrily scoop up any of his writings to devour as soon as I am aware of them. I am of course a science nerd but also am a practicing oncology nurse practitioner for the last 13 years but have worked in oncology settings in various roles since the mid 1990s. Even with my long time work in this field I always learn something new from Dr Mukherjee’s books. Keep them coming please!
