They call it The Violence: a strange epidemic that causes the infected to experience sudden bursts of animalistic rage, with no provocation and no memory of their crimes. While it tears the nation apart, one woman sees something unlikely in the chaos—an opportunity.

The author has a point to make
Revisado: 07-10-23
I really didn't like this book, but maybe you will.
It reminded me of The Circle in that every character and the story itself exist only in the service of the message. Sadly, for me though I agree that what the author is saying is important, I didn't find the book itself to be compelling.
Hopefully, others will enjoy it more than I did.

Nothing like some over-ennunciated agism
Revisado: 02-09-23
Apparently people over 70 with thir saggy skin and varicose veibs are appallingly comment worthy.
The narrator is good, but lingers over each letter. Thats a little distracting.
I made it obly to chapter 2. Maybe in chapter 3 it will be just brilliant. Let me know if I'm missing out on a gem.

I love John Birmingham but just no. Will not finis
Revisado: 12-14-21
The main character's dullness lacks all nuance. It's hard to separate the problem with the writing and the problem with the reading.
So the main character (I don't think this is a spoiler but here's a warning in case) is like a really challenged three year old. A nice three year old, but a three year old. This is emphasized because Dan Bitter reads to us as though this is a children's book.
My issue isn't the main character's inability to read, tell time and count. My issue is that there's no balance to it. All that could be true and he could still have some maturity. He's got a girlfriend. She is involved with a three year old in a man's body. It's icky It's all icky.
John Birmingham is one of my favorite writers. Dan Bittner seems to be a fine narrator. This just isn't their best work.

I found the journal at work. Well, I don't know if you'd call it work, but that's where I found it. It's the lost journal of Nikola Tesla, one of the greatest inventors and visionaries ever. Before he died in 1943, he kept a notebook filled with spectacular claims and outrageous plans.

I don't understand why Racusa isn't better known. Her books are smart and emotional without sappiness. She's just an excellent storyteller. I hope she writes many more.

Yahtzee!
Revisado: 08-09-19
Yahtzee Croshaw is always fun. More fun here than even his prior work. The best thing about his books is the ability to be silly without ever skirting stupid, a line that's very easy to cross.
Will Save the Galaxy is especially good because the characters are so compelling. It's easy to be invested.

Half a book too long
Revisado: 01-31-15
I didn't see the movie, but I have a feeling this may be a rare instance of a movie being better than the book. The first half is not bad. I might have given it three or four stars, but really the second half is boring and meandering purposeless. I listened to the whole thing. It's not criminal or anything. It's just not very good.
