The Norman Conquest trilogy (structural mastery) and Man of the Moment (intensely suspenseful) should be produced everywhere in US. I’ll keep listening!

In pitch-perfect voices, Kathryn Stockett creates three extraordinary women whose determination to start a movement of their own forever changes a town, and the way women—mothers, daughters, caregivers, friends—view one another. A deeply moving novel filled with poignancy, humor, and hope, The Help is a timeless and universal story about the lines we abide by, and the ones we don't.

Revisado: 03-04-13
What did you love best about The Help?
To be alive to hear this great book is a wonderful thing! We are so lucky that we have the richness of so many talented actresses reading this amazing book. It's like listening to great theater.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Help?
The "nekked man" in the yard at Celia's.
Which character – as performed by the narrators – was your favorite?
Minnie. But what I loved was all the different people doing each other: Minnie doing Celia, Minnie doing Hilly, Skeeter doing Hilly, Abileen doing Hilly.

Historia
Nearly six hundred years ago, a short, genial, cannily alert man in his late 30s took a very old manuscript off a library shelf, saw with excitement what he had discovered, and ordered that it be copied. That book was the last surviving manuscript of an ancient Roman philosophical epic by Lucretius—a beautiful poem containing the most dangerous ideas: that the universe functioned without the aid of gods, that religious fear was damaging to human life, and that matter was made up of very small particles.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I love this book. How close our world came to NOT becoming enlightened. We might have been in the dark ages still. But we're not, and it's a miracle. We should count our blessings every day that we are literate! It's also a cautionary tale against all those who don't value critical thinking and higher learning.
What other book might you compare The Swerve to and why?
In a class by itself.
What does Edoardo Ballerini bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Such a beautiful and sensuous reader of English and Italian.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No.

Absolutely. Wonderful actors express the richness and depth of the emotions.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Leo, of course.
What does the narrators bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Accents, age, geography, doubt, shock...
If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
One of the greatest gifts we can give another is to truly see that person. So many of us are simply invisible.

Would you try another book from Hilary Mantel and/or Simon Slater?
Yes. But difficult to parse out what is spoken dialogue and what is inner dialogue. This got confusing.
What does Simon Slater bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
So much contempt in his voice!
Did Wolf Hall inspire you to do anything?

A great sweep of a novel; compassionate and funny
Revisado: 03-04-13

#4
Who was your favorite character and why?
Desdemona and her interactions with the Nation of Islam. Funny doesn't even begin to describe this section!
What about Kristoffer Tabori’s performance did you like?
He plays such a range of characters with depth, emotion, humor.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No

I highly recommend this. One can appreciate just the coming-of-age story, the war and displacement story, and the genetics story (which feels like it's alive).

Historia
In the Polish city of Lodz, the Brothers Ashkenazi grew up very differently in talent and in temperament. Max, the firstborn, is fiercely intelligent and conniving, determined to succeed financially by any means necessary. Slower-witted Jacob is strong, handsome, and charming but without great purpose in life. While Max is driven by ambition and greed to be more successful than his brother, Jacob is drawn to easy living and decadence.

Tolstoy, watch out!
Revisado: 03-04-13
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
How is it that I.J. Singer is not read widely? His story-telling skills are on a par with Tolstoy. His characters are rich and varied just as in War and Peace and cover as much war, geography (Poland and Russia), labor relations, class struggle, and individual turmoil.
What did you like best about this story?
Reading how traditional societies morph into secular culture and revolutionary movements.
Have you listened to any of Stefan Rudnicki’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
N/A
If you could take any character from The Brothers Ashkenazi out to dinner, who would it be and why?
Nissan. He's the son of an ultra-orthodox Jewish rabbi, but he is not religious. Instead, his creed is Marxism. He's so pure in his beliefs and clearly the hero of this multi-layered novel.
Any additional comments?
I wish more of Singer's books were available on audio.

Historia
It's the early 1980s—the country is in a deep recession, and life after college is harder than ever. In the cafés on College Hill, the wised-up kids are inhaling Derrida and listening to Talking Heads. But Madeleine Hanna, dutiful English major, is writing her senior thesis on Jane Austen and George Eliot, purveyors of the marriage plot that lies at the heart of the greatest English novels.

Revisado: 06-13-12
Who was your favorite character and why?
Leonard: so complex and earnest and beautiful; but Phyllida, too, because even though I think we're "supposed" to dislike her or mock her, I felt great compassion for her, too.
Have you listened to any of David Pittu’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I LOVED it.
Any additional comments?
Anyone who went to college in the 80's, and especially anyone who's taken English or Religion classes will enjoy this.
