I listened to each book back to back and paid cash for all of them. Terrific adventures! I wanted to screen them before letting my sons read/listen to them, and I myself have thoroughly enjoyed the stories. They are packed with adventure, danger, and heroic deeds that inspire courage and character. Worth paying for!

For parents, know that this book is the most violent of the Old Natalia trilogy. Characters are shot, cleaved in two, overwhelmed, etc. There is also an element of dark sorcery and resurrection of a kind. Maybe look into it before your younger children. However, I think the overall themes of courage, friendship, loyalty, and good triumphing over evil, are solid themes for young minds to chew on.

For the author, I wish I knew more about the gap between books II and III of Old Natalia. How did Grimble escape the battle at the end of book II? Also, I would not begrudge a few more chapters detailing the entire gap between those books. In fact, should you feel so inspired, I know I could listen to an entire book about it. Dear Smith: we want more!

Elements of peril and violence, so perhaps a better listen for upper elementary and up. Parents may judge accordingly. A powerful sequel that further develops the characters of the royal family. Highly recommend. I only wish it was longer!

Wonderful fantasy for a younger audience. I will recommend this to my boys as they get older. Appropriate for older elementary and up. The action becomes a little intense towards the climax, and there are elements of trauma and combat terror. Otherwise, it is a good read for children.

The narrator did a fine job—he is easy to listen to. There some better voice actors out there, but Eric Fritzius is great.

S. D. Smith writes clear, linear stories. They’re easy to follow. If you or your child are avid readers, you will devour these. I paid cash for the sequel, if that tells you anything. They’re worthwhile fun. Short listens.

A remarkable conclusion to the trilogy. Genuine surprises. Full circle character development, tragic and wonderful. Mind bending philosophical quandaries. Heartwarming. Tchaikovsky pushes the characters (and the readers) to their limits, with satisfying resolution.

Perfectly paced. Tchaikovsky wove a web of story that captures the imagination and intellect of the listener. He made me question speciesism, war, and the meaning of our existence. He even enraptured me with the romance of arachnids.

Beautiful story, and a perfect compliment in any genre.

The performance was also wonderful. Hudson has a soft, easy voice. I could easily listen to her all day.

I have followed the breadcrumbs of Andy Weir’s and similar works to this story. I almost didn’t bite—at less than an hour, I questioned if it was worth the Audible credit. I gambled and won, having thoroughly enjoyed this short story. Short—powerful—memorable.

I love audiobooks. But, rarely does one demand attention by force of shear fascination. I couldn’t put it down, so to speak. Andy’s characters are alive, and I had to keep listening—I had to know what happened next. I finished this book in a little over a week. His other books are already in my download queue. Like Anton Ego from Pixar’s “Ratatouille”, I am hungry for more. This one deserves a listen!
