Historia
Woodrow Wilson Nickel, age 105, feels his life ebbing away. But when he learns giraffes are going extinct, he finds himself recalling the unforgettable experience he cannot take to his grave. It’s 1938. The Great Depression lingers. Hitler is threatening Europe, and world-weary Americans long for wonder. They find it in two giraffes who miraculously survive a hurricane while crossing the Atlantic. What follows is a twelve-day road trip in a custom truck to become Southern California’s first giraffes. Behind the wheel is the young Dust Bowl rowdy Woodrow.

Great storytelling read at breakneck speed, unusual, full of care and memory with an awareness of aging, war and nature.

Historia
Young Richard Antoine White and his mother don't have a key to a room or a house. Sometimes they have shelter, but they never have a place to call home. Still, they have each other, and Richard believes he can look after his mother, even as she struggles with alcoholism and sometimes disappears, sending Richard into loops of visiting familiar spots until he finds her again. And he always does - until one night, when he almost dies searching for her in the snow and is taken in by his adoptive grandparents.

Inspiring for Anyone
Revisado: 12-02-23
I liked the honesty about his beginning home life, the love that he shared as well.
His specificity about his constant challenges, his sharing of failures and how continually hard he had to work gave a more realistic picture of what is needed to be good. His public recognition that this is not what often happens for the people in his original community point to what needs to be done to provide « steps up » for the students of the future.

Historia
In the spring of 2020, Lara’s three daughters return to the family's orchard in Northern Michigan. While picking cherries, they beg their mother to tell them the story of Peter Duke, a famous actor with whom she shared both a stage and a romance years before at a theater company called Tom Lake. As Lara recalls the past, her daughters examine their own lives and relationship with their mother, and are forced to reconsider the world and everything they thought they knew.

A sweet yet mixed musing.
Revisado: 09-24-23
I agree with the term lyrical for the telling of the story. A loving mother tells her daughters of her past love and lives, while also showing her love of her family and the land the family inhabits. A tribute, ultimately, to wise choices in life.

Historia
We all think we know the South. Even those who have never lived there can rattle off a list of signifiers: the Civil War, Gone with the Wind, the Ku Klux Klan, plantations, football, Jim Crow, slavery. But the idiosyncrasies, dispositions, and habits of the region are stranger and more complex than much of the country tends to acknowledge. In South to America, Imani Perry shows that the meaning of American is inextricably linked with the South, and that our understanding of its history and culture is the key to understanding the nation as a whole.

Captivating, factual, revelatory.
Revisado: 06-14-22
Imani Perry’s book fills in details for the now familiar telling of black history. She weaves times, cultural differences, strengths and weakness of both South and North, so that culpability runs through her fabric.
Excellent.
