Historia
What won't we try in our quest for perfect health, beauty, and the fountain of youth? Well, just imagine a time when doctors prescribed morphine for crying infants. When liquefied gold was touted as immortality in a glass. And when strychnine - yes, that strychnine, the one used in rat poison - was dosed like Viagra. Looking back with fascination, horror, and not a little dash of dark, knowing humor, Quackery recounts the lively, at times unbelievable, history of medical misfires and malpractices.

As a physician, I’ve always been amazed by the different things. We’ve tried over the years to treat human disease. This book provides a historical recounting of all the ways we got it wrong.

Historia
In 1993, David Koresh and a band of heavily armed evangelical Christians took on the might of the US government. A two-month siege of their compound in Waco, Texas, ended in a firefight that killed seventy-six, including twenty-five children. America is still picking up the pieces, and we still haven't heard the full story.

Unbelievable story that changes what media told you
Revisado: 04-12-24
I remember the narrative spun by media painting the Branch Davidians as crazy religious fanatics. Truth is, they may have been crazy, religious fanatics, but they were mostly minding their own business. This book clearly shows evidence of federal overreach.

Historia
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

All the feelings.
Revisado: 06-03-22
This was a wonderful entertaining novel. They were mini surprises for me. I found myself laughing out loud at unexpected plays on words and lively discussion between the different characters in the novel. I expected that a novel about survival during an apocalyptic event would be full of sadness and then punctuated by hope. This novel does a good job of exploring all of the emotions in between. I would highly recommend it, and I will be looking for other titles by this author.

Fascinating apocalyptic survival story
Revisado: 05-29-22
I loved the first half of the book. It is enthralling. The second half takes a temporal and ideological jump of epic proportions. There is a lapse of 5,000 years. In this second half of the book there are two groups of characters who have survived the same event, and I would really like to have heard their story. I’m hoping it was a teaser alluding to two more books about the diggers and the pingers.

Historia
In one of the most compelling combat narratives ever written, Staff Sergeant David Bellavia, an Army infantry platoon leader in Iraq, gives a teeth-rattling, first-hand account of 11 straight days of heavy house-to-house fighting during the climactic second battle of Fallujah. His actions in the firefight, which included killing five insurgents in hand-to-hand combat, earned Bellavia the Bronze Star, the Silver Star, and New York state's highest military honor, the Conspicuous Service Cross.

A day in the life of an army infantryman
Revisado: 04-05-21
Wonderful book. Visceral storytelling. Very engaging retelling of deployment. Previously I have been enthralled by special forces stories, but this is right along with them. It’s a story of brotherhood and the burden of leadership. There is one particular story told that was told with such detail, you will feel as though the fight is feet in front of you.

Historia
In Everthing Is F*cked, Mark Manson turns his gaze from the inevitable flaws within each individual self to the endless calamities taking place in the world around us. Drawing from the pool of psychological research on these topics, as well as the timeless wisdom of philosophers such as Plato, Nietzsche, and Tom Waits, he dissects religion and politics and the uncomfortable ways they have come to resemble one another. He looks at our relationships with money, entertainment, and the internet, and how too much of a good thing can psychologically eat us alive.

Not really about hope. More about why home sucks.
Revisado: 04-05-21
I really disliked this book, but that is mainly because it is ideologically contrary to my political, personal, and spiritual beliefs. This book is all about embracing the suck. It’s a modern take on old philosophy. It might be an interesting read for somebody interested in Nietzsche, but that’s about it. Don’t read it if you are in a bad place.

Historia
The number one New York Times best-selling story about American Olympic triumph in Nazi Germany, the inspiration for the PBS documentary The Boys of '36, broadcast to coincide with the 2016 Summer Olympics and the 80th anniversary of the boys' gold medal race. Out of the depths of the Depression comes an irresistible story about beating the odds and finding hope in the most desperate of times - the improbable, intimate account of how nine working-class boys from the American West showed the world at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin what true grit really meant.

Revisado: 04-01-21
Prior to reading this book, I knew nothing about rowing crew. I still know very little, but the story of persistence, heroism, leader ship, and a virtuous national pride yield an inspiring and delightful read. I would highly recommend it. If you have any reticence because you don’t know much about the sport, it’s irrelevant, and I promise you will enjoy it.

This is an amazing tale of one man and his journey to the military. He is a true hero, but also seems like the guy he would enjoy having a beer with. He is humble and amazing all at the same time. Is storytelling is engaging and illustrative. I would highly recommend enjoying this book.

In 2012, on his third tour of duty in Afghanistan, an improvised explosive device left Dan Crenshaw's right eye destroyed and his left blinded. Only through the careful hand of his surgeons, and what doctors called a miracle, did Crenshaw's left eye recover partial vision. And yet, he persevered, completing two more deployments. Why? There are certain stories we tell ourselves about the hardships we face—we can become paralyzed by adversity or we can adapt and overcome. We can be fragile or we can find our fortitude. Crenshaw delivers a set of lessons to help you do just that.

America needs more of this
Revisado: 07-16-20
This book provides a very important message for America and its current political climate. Every snowflake needs to read and internalize the main idea of this book, which is all about navigating life in a society that attempts to make excuses for you. It was a great message, but seemed repetitive at times.

Historia
When Thomas Jefferson became president in 1801, America faced a crisis. The new nation was deeply in debt and needed its economy to grow quickly, but its merchant ships were under attack. Pirates from North Africa's Barbary coast routinely captured American sailors and held them as slaves, demanding ransom and tribute payments far beyond what the new country could afford.
