Couldn't finish the book for boredom
Revisado: 08-15-24
I got through the first two Second Sons books because my dislike of the female narrator was tempered by my liking for the male narrator and a better plot. However, by the time I got to Alcott Hall, I just couldn't stand her anymore. She has basically two female character voices and they're both nasally with more than a hint of whine. I gave 2 stars for performance based on Dan Calley's contribution.
The plot of Alcott Hall--what little there is of it--is patently absurd. This is just an excuse for graphic sex scenes not at all enhanced by the nasal whining moans of the female narrator. The plot itself isn't anything new, but it's been done and by far better writers--although many of them don't use the reverse harem trope. In my opinion, this author did the reverse harem plot much better in the first two Second Sons books and the characters/conflicts were far more interesting. Read those if you must, but save yourself time and money and skip book 3.

I kept waiting for the plot
Revisado: 07-18-24
Having read Allie Therin's Magic in Manhattan series, I was very much looking forward to its sequel series: Roaring Twenties Magic. I thought it to be a terrific letdown. The characters spent most of the time thinking about having sex with each other and when they finally stopped thinking and started doing, it seemed more attention was paid to that aspect than the plotline.
Instead of being an improvement on the first book, Proper Scoundrels, this sequel was even duller. The 'heroes' spent most of the book looking for the heroes from the Magic in Manhattan series and worrying about who had what relics and thinking about/having sex. I never could figure out how the various types of magic worked or who had what type of magic and how it did/did not affect mundanes. I got the vague impression that there was a set up for a third book, but I'm not really sure. In any case I won't be buying it.
The ONLY positive thing I have to say is the narrator was superb. I was particularly impressed with the way he switched voices/accents during dialog scenes involving multiple characters.

Historia
When my father wanders into the enchanted realm of the fae, I know I have to go after him. And when he gets imprisoned, I'll do anything to save him, even trade my freedom for his. I had no idea I'd end up imprisoned by four sexy fae who turn into beasts at night.

Boring doesn't begin to cover it
Revisado: 05-29-24
OMG you guys! Could this get any worse? The writing is soooo juvenile. In fact, it reads more like fanfic fantasy than something written by a supposed professional writer. Actually, writers, as there are two of them.
All the princes are hot. Rosalina is hot, in fact, dripping, for each of them and she tells us over and over and over and over and over. Her 'voice' is annoying and the narrator makes it even worse. I don't know this narrator so I'm willing to give her the benefit of the doubt regarding her performance and think she's reading it as she was directed to read it. In any case, 'nails on a chalkboard' doesn't begin to cover the reading.
The male narrator, IMO, does a much better job. The princes' dialog is equally as boring as Rosalina's but he still manages to give an individual sound to each man. They're all anguished over the curse and we're told this over and over and over and over and--well, you get the picture.
I tried to like the book. I pushed really hard but eventually gave up 7/8 of the way through. Life's too short--regardless of how old the reader is--to have to endure this drivel. I want to make it clear that I'm giving the story 1 star, not because it's not for me, but because it's so unbelievably bad. I'm so mad that I bought the 3 books in the series. That's money I won't get back.

Brain Candy
Revisado: 11-17-23
If you're looking for depth in this story of a human woman married to a non-human male for the sake of their people, read Radiance by Grace Draven. If you want the "lite" version of that story, this one's for you. The characters embody most of the tropes you think of with this type of story. Feisty heroine, bold but squishy inside cinnamon-bun hero, dominant parents requiring the marriage, hero's buddies. Yes, there are smexy parts, poorly written and overly-emphimismed, but they're there. Truth be told, I enjoyed this story when I first read it, but upon listening, I found it severely lacking and I absolutely hated the narrator's voice. To my ears it had just a touch of annoying teen and I found it hard to enjoy her male characters at all. And worst of all, the narrator actually sounded bored with her material some of the time,

Historia
Victorian London was notorious for its pickpockets. But in the country houses of the elite, gentleman burglars, art thieves and con men preyed on the rich and titled. Wealthy victims—with their pride and reputation at stake—would never go to the police. What they needed was a society insider, one of their own, a person of discretion and finely tuned powers of observation.

Not that intriguing
Revisado: 10-03-23
I wanted to really like this. The synopsis is intriguing. The story is not.
The characters are all one-dimensional. She doesn't want to get married; she wants to have a 'purpose' but not a career that would--heaven help us--involve being paid like a common tradeswoman. He has a "condition" but don't ask me exactly what it is. It comes and goes and involves headaches and fainting spells, but that's all I could discern after hours of listening.
The dialog is somewhat stilted, the narrative is even more stilted. The reader/performer does all right with the dialog, but when reading the narration her phrasing is odd and a bit off-putting. I got this book on sale, so I suppose it may be worth what I paid for it, but next time I see a book by this author/reader, I'll pass.
