A Great Companion For A Writer
Revisado: 01-22-17
I've written and had published 10 books, most of them biographical novels. I am also a huge fan of David Morrell's writing. I never realized what a wonderful, generous teacher he is. This book is like a sympathetic mentor, a writing partner, getting one over the hump of starting, finishing, and selling your novel.

Revisado: 03-27-16
Louis Markos is an amazing lecturer and Professor and this expansive course brought me back to the place I love -- studying literature. But it is Prof Markos that made it work for me. I'm going to get his other course. INSPIRING!

Historia
Only once did David Foster Wallace give a public talk on his views on life, during a commencement address given in 2005 at Kenyon College. This is the audio recording of David Foster Wallace delivering that very address. How does one keep from going through their comfortable, prosperous adult life unconsciously? How do we get ourselves out of the foreground of our thoughts and achieve compassion? The speech captures Wallace's electric intellect as well as his grace in attention to others.

How To Graduate College And Not Be The Center Of The Universe
Revisado: 09-07-15
Great speech on getting out of yourself and not listening to the committee in your head. DFW's writing is funny and insightful and it is sad that he no longer walks among us.

Historia
A survey of the quirks and quandaries of the English language, focusing on our strange and wonderful grammar. Why do we say "I am reading a catalog" instead of "I read a catalog"? Why do we say "do" at all? Is the way we speak a reflection of our cultural values? Delving into these provocative topics and more, Our Magnificent Bastard Tongue distills hundreds of years of fascinating lore into one lively history.

ENGLISH, THE MOST FLEXIBLE LANGUAGE AROUND
Revisado: 08-28-15
Where does Our Magnificent Bastard Tongue rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
This is one of my favorite audio books.
What did you like best about this story?
McWhorter is a fun guy and a terrific lecturer and his reading of his book was completely entertaining.
Have you listened to any of John McWhorter’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
No.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Um -- a movie about the history of English? I think not.
Any additional comments?
I'm an English wonk and a writer myself and McWhorter's book on the history and genesis of the language was fascinating and enlightening.
