Historia
In the wake of World War II, with America ascendant and the Soviet Union devastated by the conflict, the Space Race should have been over before it started. But the underdog Soviets scored a series of victories—starting with the 1957 launch of Sputnik and continuing in the years following--that seemed to achieve the impossible. It was proof, it seemed, that the USSR had manpower and collective will that went beyond America's material advantages. They had asserted themselves as a world power. But in The Wrong Stuff, John Strausbaugh tells a different story.

Perfection
Revisado: 05-08-25
Narrator was excellent. The Soviet Union was not.
Found myself laughing quite a bit, but the book still has its somber moments. I will do a vodka toast to all the dead Cosmonauts and workers who died because of Russian ineptitude. The wrong stuff indeed.

Historia
This is the way the world ends: with a nanosecond of computer error in a Defense Department laboratory and a million casual contacts that form the links in a chain letter of death. And here is the bleak new world of the day after: a world stripped of its institutions and emptied of 99 percent of its people. A world in which a handful of panicky survivors choose sides - or are chosen.

The plot is not good
Revisado: 05-01-25
I like some of the characters well enough, but the plot takes a while to get to any major event. I like a slow burn, but the slow burn has to be interesting. This is only interesting sometimes. The characters aren't always that interesting to read about.
I might be able to forgive a lot of the flaws, if it had a better ending. The climax is super disappointing after trudging through all the extremely long preamble. I don't understand why this book is regarded so highly.
I would offer more opinions on the story and why it is bad, but I don't want to put spoilers in the review. There are much much better ways to spend your time than wading through this mediocre tome.

Pro Torture much?
Revisado: 03-03-25
I but too pro Torture in my opinion. this book didn't just feature torture, it supported it. other than that the first half of the story was great, the 2nd half takes way too long, and has lots of filler about character motivations that are long ago known to the reader. Clancy could have cut out large chunks of the second half.

I was really surprised by how good this was. Gives a interesting glimpse into the workinga of one of the colony worlds. It adds more depth to the Expanse universe. Definitely read this.

Historia
Deep in the African rain forest, near the legendary ruins of the Lost City of Zinj, an expedition of eight American geologists are mysteriously and brutally killed in a matter of minutes. Ten thousand miles away, Karen Ross, the Congo Project Supervisor, watches a gruesome video transmission of the aftermath: a camp destroyed, tents crushed and torn, equipment scattered in the mud alongside dead bodies - all motionless except for one moving image - a grainy, dark, man-shaped blur.

good all around

Not his strongest work, but a great little story, well paced. The science in some parts of the story are a bit dated but still interesting to read about what the people of the late seventies were speculating about.

Excellent continuation of the first law universe
Revisado: 10-06-23
Definitely not "woke", it's a story of old generations trying to teach the new not to make the same mistakes. Just because it has a mother chastising a young 20 something year old man for being too rash doesn't make it woke. That just sounds like realism to me. You have to be realistic. Young people being rash and not thinking before they do something is just realistic...
And besides that the Dogman, who is a man, is also preaching to his daughter to hold her back from making the same mistakes he made. it's the same with Orso and his father Jezal. And Glokta and his daughter as well.
It's the same theme of old versus new, not "women are smarter than men". Some of the women make some dumb decisions in this, just as dumb as the men. If you aren't suffering from "anti-woke" brain rot you could easily see that this story is about older generations and newer generations.
Very solid first entry into a new trilogy for the first law universe. It has the same dark humor as the previous books which I love as well. It just has everything you love Abercrombie for. 5 stars.

Good! But plot is similar to book 1
Revisado: 03-21-23
I like everything about it as stated in the summary my only complaint is how similar this plot is to the first book. the setting is different, some new characters involved, but the plot broadly was similar. Still worth reading if you enjoyed the first one!

Solid sci-fi
Revisado: 09-26-22
This book has a lot going for it. Lots of scientific questions and ideas are explored. There is drama, and mystery. Whenever you think you figured out what is going to happen it throws you for a loop, and not in a cheesy "subvert expectations just for the sake of it" kind of way, it actually has some good twists and turns. Definitely a Michael Crichton book worth reading.

Story is good, narrator wasn't too bad
Revisado: 05-07-22
Do not go into this story expecting a grand universe ending threat. It's more on the spectrum of slice of life. Just a story about a crew doing space things for the most part. Though the story I found to be pretty solid overall. Not mind blowing or epic but solid. Which is suspect the author was going for to begin with.
it's biggest strength is it's exploration of what a future interspecies society of sentients would be like, and also it's exploration of scientific and philosophical concepts. The concepts it explores are not mind blowing or trail blazing, but they are a solid part of the book. I definitely enjoyed.
the next strongest aspect is the characters. It does a good job of exploring each character's motivations and backstory's and gives you a good understanding of why they are the way they are. some of the characters can behave cringey at times but people behave cringey in real life.
in summary, what we have here is a solid story all around, but nothing ground breaking. I recommend if you are looking for a solid story without a grand epic plotline, and just mostly about people going about their lives on an instellar space ship, with a few dramatic moments here and there.
