The basic premise of the book is good enough: Religion has a significant impact on our culture and so to effectively participate individuals should have a functional understanding of religion.

It takes well over 2/3 of the book to say that.

He leaves little time to explore religions. When he gets down to his core religious literacy facts (or as another reviewer puts it so well “factoids”) they are presented in alphabetic order. So one gets little if any of overview of a religion in context of itself let alone other religions.

I think the two prior reviews make outstanding points: Author seems to have all the dots but can't connect them. If you want to learn more about religion, do not get this book.

After the authors appearance on the Daily Show, my daughter and I were excited to read and discuss this book. I found it sufficiently disappointing that I could not recommend she spend the time to listening to it. I can’t recommend anyone else do so either.

I love American history. I listen to about two dozen books a year but I am certainly not a professional historian or book critic. I find books that explore the human motivations of the past very compelling.

I have little interest in getting up in arms about “political bias” one way or the other. In my view the interplay of political differences predates the nation and how those differences interact is in fact much of our history. (My bias is there needs to be interaction not domination of one by the other but like I said that is my bias.)

Unfortunately I find this book is well named. From it I know don’t know much more about history. Listening to it is, at its best, an amusing string of history like factoids where there is less than satisfactory insight into the interplay of the differences that makes the events significant.

The book moves like a grade school history quiz in Q & A fashion, with time line and odd small quote presented as if they were extra credit at section ends. I find there is little more than the chronology. I want the interplay of personalities and events.

I disagree that this book is good starting point for an individual starting a personal exploration of American History. Mostly because I find there is little of the drama and struggle of individuals that make the history compelling and relevant.
