THANK YOU, Michael Cruz Kayne, for taking a brave leap into the cultural void by facing grief using your humor. This is beautifully crafted storytelling and a wave that will ripple far into the future. Fisher’s Wave.
I have lost an infant - stillborn with a fatal birth defect. There is no adequate language to cope with this. And in our shared culture, talking with each other about grief is an awkward, unseemly, and sometimes even ugly and hurtful or abusive experience. My personal opinion about one cause is that our late-stage capitalist environment hasn’t found a way to exploit and monetize it. But that’s separate topic altogether.
Kayne’s story brings another beautiful prism to the discussion. His story - funny, endearing, real, deeply touching - now sits alongside Anderson Cooper’s recent podcast “All There Is” in my vault of compassion tools for the grieving, which is all of us.
I became a hospice social worker out of the ashes of my loss. Like Kayne’s amazing wife who nurses in a NICU. It transforms my grief into tangible energy to pour out to others who grieve or prepare to.
Thank you, Michael Cruz Kayne, for sharing your love for Fisher in this fashion. And Audible for making it available.

I could not get past the tone of the voice actors used to present this story.

Changing the tired old narrative of “make it work” is MIGHTY! Thank you to Tracy for promoting freedom and agency to those of us who are better than those persons we chose.

I cannot help but love this woman. She’s brilliant and freaking hilarious! There are many times I laughed uproariously listening to this. I am so grateful she wrote so much. Otherwise I would have missed out on feeling such a kinship to a woman as far away from me as she. I’m an addict in long-term recovery, a psychotherapist for substance abuse and mental health. She speaks to me on so many levels. I think she puts a familiar face on an arguably normal person dealing with both substance abuse and mental health problems. She describes the internal workings well. I love you, Carrie. Thank you for leaving your breadcrumb trail. Rest in Peace.

This story was immensely thought-provoking and satisfying to listen to. From Harry’s recording his story in his own voice to his courage standing up to the oppressive elements of the corporation/family that raised him to his fierce loyalty to his wife and children - he touched me to my core. His story is very reminiscent of his mother’s own struggle to survive the royal machine. Diana’s influence is apparent throughout.

He manages to humanize his father, showing a much more favorable image than the one the press has fomented over the decades. Even in spite of apparently obvious serious causes for disdain. It is a sad story, at its base.

Of course it is a complex story, and most of us will never know the backstories. But I have been exposed to enough of the vitriol spewn forth from tabloids & “legitimate” press to see for myself the dangerous conditions Harry & Megan face. And this without ever having purchased or opened one rag to read beyond the “headlines.” The spin has become a grotesque soap opera with real-life casualties. I applaud Harry’s work to protect his own family from further damage.

I am hopeful the couple is able to remain safe and to thrive and to prosper in spite of being abandoned by his “family.” I sense Diana is truly resting in peace through Harry’s healing and strength. Bravo. And Godspeed.

Suleika Jouad brings it all and leaves it all on the field in her book Between Two Kingdoms. I was pleasantly surprised at the extent of her disclosures about her cancer ordeal and the authenticity that shines through her story. She’s REAL. And not afraid to show it. I learned about her book as I had my post-treatment scans for my own cancer battle, awaiting the 3 appointments with oncologist, radiation oncologist, and surgeon in the next 10 days. So, my interest was very personal. However, as a former journalist and self-squelched writer, I found her language, flow, word choice to all be very evocative. It made details of her story tangible, relatable. Recorded in her own voice, the story flowed seamlessly, with frequent shining moments of brilliant simile or adjective choice. It was an easy listen in one sense and an emotional challenge in another for me. Her experiences were markedly different from my own, but her relatability was consistent. It’s a spiritual tale with no preaching or navel-gazing. A poignant human story that makes me look forward to reading her other works - and watching her grow. I am aware that Ms Jouad has recently begun treatment for a recurrence of her leukemia. My heart goes out to her and her family.

I was spellbound from the start, listening to Russ Shorto’s SMALLTIME, re-listening to chapters to collect more detail and enjoy the tale. Full disclosure, I grew up in Johnstown, PA. I had connections to places and recognized surnames of high school and college classmates among the people who lived parts of the story. That brought the story to life for me. I frequented one of the bars Shorto’s father built and even became a short-order cook there for a time, though long after he had sold the business.

As I trained as a writer, though, the interwoven memoir/history structure intrigues me. Shorto seems to have struck a balance between interesting, solid research and carefully revealing his own families’ intergenerational lessons.

I loved the history of Sicily’s relationship to Italy and the details of Italian immigration experiences. I had never understood the “No Italians” references culturally beyond the general hostility members of each wave of immigrants displayed towards the next one. My enjoyment and appreciation of this story are linked by my own Johnstown family beginning its American chapter in the same decade and location as Shorto’s, by way of Ellis Island. The writer and I came of age in the same era, so I relished the pictures he painted. He evoked an era through my senses. Well done.

Too limited a vocabulary and formulaic. The performance was adequate, but the material was only fair.
