The series came highly recommended, and I downloaded all 4 books. I was halfway through this book and still waiting for something to happen. To be honest, I bailed. I won't bother to listen to the others. That said, I did like the narrator and would listen to other books that she reads.

Surprisingly for me, the multiple narrators were not distracting. The story was engaging, even if the ending was odd and abrupt. One definitely must read Book 2 if there is to be any closure.

This book was a fail fro Minute One. The lack of narrative and storyline, and the multiple voices, was akin to listening to a movie you never heard of before without seeing the video. How was this a good idea? I want my money back.

I had high hopes for this series after reading the synopsis of Book 1. The story line seemed interesting. What I hadn't bargained for was a wishy washy heroine who couldn't make up her mind about anything and made one bad professional choice after another. How she made partner in a law firm is beyond me. Her associate was more mature, more professional and had more legal savvy than the heroine. I stuck it out to the end, but all in all, it was a disappointment.

Irritating Narration

It is almost always a huge mistake when the author reads their own work on audiobook. This is a case in point. You literally can tell where a line ends on the page and the next one begins, just from listening to her. The narration is flat and choppy. If she spoke the way she reads, she would have zero clients. Speeding it up only made it worse. This book is assigned reading for my work. I thought it would be great to listen to it on my commute. Wrong. It just is not worth wasting my time.

I don't know if reading her own work was a budget issue or an ego thing, but either way, the book suffers as a result. If I didn't have to read it, I would never buy the book after listening to her stumble through a couple of chapters. Next time she puts one of her books into audiobook form, she should spring for a good professional reader.

I really wanted to like this book. I had high hopes for both the narrator and the authors, but I felt let down all the way round. Don't get me wrong, I did enjoy some of it. I liked the insights into the backrooms of a presidency, but I thought the story should have been faster paced, especially given James Patterson's involvement in the novel. The narration was not easy to listen to and that contributed in large part to my disappointment. I like the narrator to sound like he/she is telling me a story, not reading me a story. Dennis Quaid was doing the latter. I stuck with it to the end, but it was not always easy.

B Grade Movie Script that Did Not Make The Cut

Would you try another book from Matthew Reilly and/or Rich Orlow?

Not a chance. It appears to have been written by someone hoping for a movie deal. The cliff hangers and action required far more than 'suspension of disbelief'; one had to be practically a moron to buy into the story. As another reviewer mentioned, there are plot holes you could fly a dragon through; key characters are abandoned without any word of what happened to them, while a bond is made with another character (Minnie) for no apparent reason other than that she is a kid. I stuck with it to the end, but goodness knows why. I would not recommend anyone waste their money on it.

What do you think your next listen will be?

A good mystery.

Did the narration match the pace of the story?

Most of the time the narration was paced with the story.

What character would you cut from The Great Zoo of China?

There is no need for me to cut characters. The author did a pretty good job of getting rid of the best characters already.

Any additional comments?

A bit of fluff for a young adult. Not really an adult read at all.

What would have made The Starling Project better?

A real narration, not just the dialogue. So many voices and no narration, no context. I had no idea what the heck was going on.

Would you ever listen to anything by Jeffery Deaver again?

Not in this format.

How could the performance have been better?

Not full cast. More than just dialogue. It seemed like I had been dropped into a movie that had only soundtrack and no video.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

To say I "didn't love it" is a doing the book a kindness. I simply could not get into it, could not figure out the story. I had no idea that it would be this dreadful or I never would have purchased it. Dreadful format.

Any additional comments?

Lesson learned.

Would you try another book from Lee Child and/or Jonathan McClain?

I am a big time Jack Reacher fan. I almost don't recognize him in this book. He is slow, insolent, inconsistent, easily manipulated. Not the Jack Reacher I have come to know and love. The supporting characters are nothing short of idiots. People that stupid could not possibly get themselves dressed in the morning, let alone secure such high level positions. And I miss Dick Hill. From what I can tell, there are 3 or 4 Jack Reacher books narrated by Jonathan McClain. Ne'er shall they reach my library.

Would you ever listen to anything by Lee Child again?

Definitely. I have many of the Jack Reacher books in my audible.com library. Loved them all, until this one.

Did Jonathan McClain do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

He made them all sound whiny, even Jack Reacher.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Disappointment.

Any additional comments?

Take a pass on this one and go for one of the later Jack Reacher books. You will like both the book and the hero a whole lot better, if you do.

Is there anything you would change about this book?

The book was OK. I enjoyed it, once I suspended my disbelief that a police officer saavy enough to be on the force for 20-some years and rise to a very senior level would make such a dumb move as buying a child from her abuser. That aside, I liked the twists and turns in the plot. But as with another book I listened to within the last year, it felt as though the author reached the required page count and just wound things up quickly. The story was nowhere near over yet. No satisfactory resolution, no tying the loose ends up with a bow, nothing. Rather disappointing overall. But the narrator was great, for what that is worth when the story kinds sucks, in the end.

Do you think Started Early, Took My Dog needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

The ending leaves it wide open for a sequel. "Started Early, Took My Dog" doesn't really END at all.
