Delightful Historical Fiction
Revisado: 02-22-22
Nice story that incorporates romance, time travel and a very interesting period in Siena’s history. The characters are well developed and the narration suits the characters. As usual Cassandra Campbell does an excellent job of differentiating various character’s voices making the story easy to follow. Having just experienced the pandemic, it proved to be a very interesting read indeed. Good use of a credit.

What Happened
Revisado: 09-03-21
I have loved this series from the beginning but this is one of the worst books I have ever read or listened to. The storyline is so convoluted yet at the same time repetitious that I kept checking to make sure that my device wasn’t somehow on a repeating cycle. The only character you had any sympathy for was Garmache who seems to get more abused as this series progresses. And the premise on which the story is based…selective elimination of the elderly and infirm by government edict was basically offensive and presenting “facts” in support of this was really beyond belief. Not sure I will continue with this series as she is obviously reaching too hard to keep it going.

Historia
On their first night in Paris, the Gamaches gather as a family for a bistro dinner with Armand’s godfather, the billionaire Stephen Horowitz. But an attempt on the elderly man’s life sends Armand, his wife, Reine-Marie, and his former second-in-command at the Sûreté, Jean-Guy Beauvoir, from the top of the Tour d’Eiffel, to the bowels of the Paris Archives, from luxury hotels to odd, coded works of art. It sends them deep into the secrets Armand’s godfather has kept for decades.

One of the best in this series!
Revisado: 04-12-21
This was quite different from the usual Three.Pines series. The story takes place in Paris without any of the usual characters from Three Pines except of course for the Gamache family. It was quite refreshing to get a more in-depth look at the family and the dynamics in place within. It also fleshed out Armand’s family biography which was quite interesting. Truly a delightful sojourn in Paris with some new characters and a fresh storyline.

Historia
It’s Gamache’s first day back as head of the homicide department, a job he temporarily shares with his previous second-in-command, Jean-Guy Beauvoir. Flood waters are rising across the province. In the middle of the turmoil a father approaches Gamache, pleading for help in finding his daughter. As crisis piles upon crisis, Gamache tries to hold off the encroaching chaos, and realizes the search for Vivienne Godin should be abandoned. But with a daughter of his own, he finds himself developing a profound, and perhaps unwise, empathy for her distraught father.

Not My Favorite
Revisado: 09-10-19
The series seems to be getting pretty dark. The constant attempt to diminish Gamache is getting so old that this has taken over the entire series. And now Clara has also become a target...it is just getting to dire. Where Three Pines used to be a magical place, the residents all seem to be suffering from a never ending depressive malaise. Always looked forward to the next book in this series but not at all sure that I will spend a credit on the next one. I do however appreciate this narrator and the difficult time he had overcoming his fabulous predecessor.

Beautiful story and great narrator
Revisado: 11-09-18
Nice family story touching all the right topics. Simon Vance is one of my favorite narrators and he does an exceptional job with the mood of this book. Set in a flooded, rainy Paris, it was as though the setting became one of the most important characters. Truly a gem.

When you listen to this audiobook, you will make many assumptions. You will assume you are listening to a story about a jealous ex-wife. You will assume she is obsessed with her replacement - a beautiful, younger woman who is about to marry the man they both love. You will assume you know the anatomy of this tangled love triangle. Assume nothing. Twisted and deliciously chilling, The Wife Between Us exposes the secret complexities of an enviable marriage - and the dangerous truths we ignore in the name of love.

Typical of this new genre
Revisado: 07-07-18
Much the same as many of the newer books of this type. Alcoholic/unstable woman bound and determined to focus on someone else's life in an obsessive manner that seems hard to understand. I agree that the beginning of the book was a bit confusing with the 'Nellie' and 'Vanessa' characters but is quickly sorted out and was not that much of an issue for me. Generally I like to use credits for books that I can listen to over and over again, Circe being that sort of timeless book. This however is not. This narrator was, as usual, great.

Wonderful journey into another world!
Revisado: 05-24-18
Beautiful narration and lovely story. One of those books that take you out of time and place. The narrator was spot on in projecting just the perfect tone for this book. The story itself was nuanced and provided the magical setting you would expect to find in the world inhabited by these characters.

Delicious
Revisado: 02-10-17
Would you consider the audio edition of The Last Chinese Chef to be better than the print version?
Having the book narrated adds so many nuances that, I feel, would be lost in the printed version.
What did you like best about this story?
It was satisfying on many levels. Character development was excellent as we took this journey with both of the main protagonists. Vivid history of Chinese cooking and generations past made this multifaceted and much more interesting than I expected. A wonderful book that covers it all, grief, family, travel and cooking. One of the most satisfying books I have had the pleasure of listening to.

Repetitive and boring
Revisado: 01-11-17
The story line became very repetitive as the Meduim, though fairly successful rose to the bait each time someone challenged her. Though she stayed true to character it became an annoying trait. The ending was ok, but it's unbelievability was a bit far fetched

What a great story. Not your usual who-done-it. Characters are well flushed out and the author sets the stage with an excellent descriptive narrative. Another one of those audiobooks where you almost believe you are 'watching' a story. My best spent credit in a long time.
