Historia
In The MAGA Diaries, she tells not only her story of loving and leaving the conservative movement but the history of the right wing, painting a shocking picture of how they recruit, train, and indoctrinate generations of young people and shape them into the influential leaders and the supporting cast of tomorrow’s Republican party. They are ruthless in building robust networks of power, even if it means demolishing entire civic institutions, from women’s rights to fair elections—and staging a coup when it doesn’t work out.

Memoir of a stranger
Revisado: 10-16-24
I heard her on a podcast and wanted to hear more about her journey into and out of the maga movement. What I got was the life story of someone I’ve never heard of, with all the minutiae of her life and education. It felt like the story of her more than the story of a movement. I kept waiting for it to hit its stride but by the halfway mark I was eager for it to be over.
She’s a fine writer but not everyone should narrate their story. This is just my Monk-brain getting hyper focused on a weird thing I notice, but the way she says “stipend” was new to me, and I hated it. But that’s a me problem I suppose.
There are good details in here about some key players in the magaverse, but the way she always connected them to herself or inserted them into her personal narrative was exhausting.
Giving it all 3 stars because it might just be that I’m overly critical of authors that make the story about themselves. But then again, it may just not be a great book.

I must have missed something
Revisado: 10-03-21
I don’t want to spoil this story for anyone who hasn’t read it yet, but I feel like the only person forgetting anything is the author and the thing she forgot was to tell us what Alice forgot.
Can’t really explain how disappointing it was to slog through the last 3 hours just to learn…nothing.
I need to figure out a way to forget I spent money on this. Maybe I’ll go slip at the gym.

Historia
American society has always been fertile ground for conspiracy theories, but with the election of Donald Trump, previously outlandish ideas suddenly attained legitimacy. Trump himself is a conspiracy enthusiast: from his claim that global warming is a Chinese hoax to the accusations of “fake news”, he has fanned the flames of suspicion. But it was not by the power of one man alone that these ideas gained new power. Republic of Lies looks beyond the caricatures of conspiracy theorists to explain their tenacity.

A must-read...but maybe not a must-listen
Revisado: 05-25-21
An important and informational book in the post-trump years and the point where the biggest obstacle to getting past Covid is vaccine hesitancy.
I just can’t get past some of the quirky narrations and that’s my only criticism. Maybe this is regional but pronouncing -lse words (false, else, etc) with a T is new to me (faltse, eltse). Also calling the aughts “twenty oh one” vs “two thousand one” is odd. Maybe these are colloquial to some but to me they’re really distracting.

Didn’t know anything about this author or this story. Glad my friend sent it to me and I highly recommend it. So much emotion and the feelings are intense throughout, in good and bad ways. I look forward to reading more by her.
