Historia
Wings of War is the incredible true story of the P-51 Mustang fighter and the unlikely crew of designers, engineers, test pilots, and army officers who brought it from the drafting table to the skies over World War II. This is hardly a straightforward tale of building an airplane—for years, the team was stymied by corruption within the defense industry and stonewalled by the Army Air Forces, who failed to understand the Mustang’s potential.

Excellent and captivating history of the air war in Europe
Revisado: 09-08-24
This book not only tells the compelling story of the P51 Mustang, but it does so by putting it context of the overall air war in Europe. Excellent writing, storytelling, and narration.

Difficult to listen to
Revisado: 05-07-24
On the positive side, this book covers most of the basic investment types, although it would have been nice to hear something about annuities. On the downside, the narration was atrocious - obviously generated using some sort of generative AI engine since there were numerous instances of mispronounced words (example: in-DICE-es) and a super annoying staccato-like pace. There were also some small inaccuracies (example: the attempt to explain digital signatures), but overall, someone new to investing would benefit from the book - my guess is that there are better ones out there.

Historia
Slomo Venezia was born into a poor Jewish-Italian community living in Thessaloniki, Greece. At first, the occupying Italians protected his family; but when the Germans invaded, the Venezias were deported to Auschwitz. His mother and sisters disappeared on arrival, and he learned, at first with disbelief, that they had almost certainly been gassed. Given the chance to earn a little extra bread, he agreed to become a 'Sonderkommando', without realizing what this entailed.

Concise and powerful account and history
Revisado: 02-07-24
This book provides a unique and rare perspective that I have never heard before (and I've read listened to several Holocaust survival stories). It is concise, well written and well narrated.
As a bonus of sorts, the end of the book provides a full chronology of the Nazi's despicable treatment of European Jews - again, something I've not encountered in any other books on the topic.
As I've said in my reviews of similar books, this is a story that must be heard, especially in today's environment of rising antisemitism. The unique perspective of the author drives home the horror, brutality, and stark inhumanity of the Nazis and illustrates clearly man's capacity for cruelty when groupthink takes over.

True tale of human hatreds potential
Revisado: 11-24-23
A stark narrative of the brutality and horror to which the Jewish people of Europe were subjected through the hatred and fanaticism of the Nazis. Interspersed with snippets of what life was like before and during the rise of Nazism. Everyone - especially ALL American schoolchildren - should hear and study this story to clearly understand what really happened in the 1930s and 40s and that "Nazi" and "Holocaust" aren't just some abstract terms to be taken lightly.

Historia
Narrator Dan Stevens ( Downton Abbey) presents an uncanny performance of Mary Shelley's timeless gothic novel, an epic battle between man and monster at its greatest literary pitch. In trying to create life, the young student Victor Frankenstein unleashes forces beyond his control, setting into motion a long and tragic chain of events that brings Victor to the very brink of madness. How he tries to destroy his creation, as it destroys everything Victor loves, is a powerful story of love, friendship, scientific hubris, and horror.

Guess I'm tainted by the Boris Karloff movie
Revisado: 02-21-23
Ok, just call me uncultured right now. I get that this was written for another time, but it sure isn't what I expected. That in itself is not the reason for the low rating. I just have a hard time with 8+ hours (well, ok, only 6+ after I set the speed to 1.5x about 2/3 of the way through) of WHINING! And not just Dr. Frankenstein, but the monster too! I t was hard enough dealing with the monster's extreme eloquence (when I was ready for "bread.... GOOOOD!"), but to have 4 or 5 straight chapters of him doing a whining monolog was just too much! I swear, this thing could've been told very effectively in no more than 90 minutes - and I mean regular speed! And where in the heck was Igor?!

Awful narration!
Revisado: 02-01-23
Felt like I was listening in slow motion. Because of that, I had a hard time staying focused on the book, hence the mediocre story rating. perhaps with a reasonable narration, I could've stayed with the story better?

Historia
Seventy years ago, Joe Rubinstein walked out of a Nazi concentration camp. Until now, his story has been hidden from the world. Shortly before dawn on a frigid morning in Radom, Poland, 21-year-old Joe answered a knock at the door of the cottage he shared with his widowed mother and siblings. German soldiers forced him onto a crowded open-air truck. Wearing only an undershirt and shorts, Joe was left on the truck with no protection from the cold. By the next morning, several around him would be dead. From there, things got worse for young Joe, much worse.

Everyone needs to hear this story
Revisado: 12-14-22
This is the story of the sheer brutality of which humans are capable. In a day where it's so easy to call a contemporary a "Nazi" to score political points or to dismiss an opposing viewpoint, the world needs to be reminded of what "Nazi" truly means. Thank you, Joe Rubinstein, for your strength and courage, not just in what you endured, but in your willingness to relive it for the rest of the world to hear.

Historia
In December 1937, in the capital of China, one of the most brutal massacres in the long annals of wartime barbarity occurred. The Japanese army swept into the ancient city of Nanking and within weeks not only looted and burned the defenseless city but systematically raped, tortured and murdered more than 300,000 Chinese civilians. Amazingly, the story of this atrocity- one of the worst in world history- continues to be denied by the Japanese government.

A story long overdue, and a cautionary tale
Revisado: 06-03-22
The brutality of the Japanese in the early 20th century is something that is often overshadowed by that of the Nazis. Before listening to this book, however, I never realized, how little accountability there was for Japanese government after the war. This story is well-researched, well-written, and well-narrated. It is also a cautionary tale in the way that dehumanization of an adversary can lead to unimaginable horrors. I wish our own political parties here in the U.S. could hear and heed this warning.

Been a Dio fan since 1983. I tore through this book in nothing flat. Great to hear the history of the man and his music. My only complaint- and I mean COMPLAINT - is that the narrator couldn't be bothered to learn to pronounce names. "a-PIECE" ?! Really? C'mon, man!
