Inauthentic
Revisado: 11-23-24
She narrated and told stories like she was giving an interview. Nothing bad apparently ever happened to her because everything always had a flip side. The whole book is her trying to keep herself in a good light. This could have very well been an interview somewhere, as nothing new was told. I wouldn't recommend it.

Historia
Growing up in the Liberty City area of Miami, Florida, Katrina “Trina” Taylor spent her childhood feeling relatively sheltered by her mother and stepfather. Trina and her mother had an unbreakable bond, and Liberty City felt like a playground made just for her. And even at a young age, Trina knew what she wanted: to be a powerful, successful, and magnetic woman, a woman who was entirely self-reliant and independent. In Da Baddest, Trina’s voice is, as always, powerful, insightful, witty, and provocative, while also showcasing her vulnerability and deep love for her family, home, and music

Authentic and Engaging
Revisado: 11-23-24
I LOVE how she narrated with enthusiasm or dread fluctuating to match the story. It was engaging all the way to the end. I enjoyed hearing how she became who she is. After seeing her on love and hip hop I truly understand how she acted and her emotions. This was a good book.

Historia
Let Us Descend describes a journey from the rice fields of the Carolinas to the slave markets of New Orleans and into the fearsome heart of a Louisiana sugar plantation. A journey that is as beautifully rendered as it is heart wrenching, the novel is “[t]he literary equivalent of an open wound from which poetry pours” (NPR). Annis, sold south by the white enslaver who fathered her, is the listener’s guide. As she struggles through the miles-long march, Annis turns inward, seeking comfort from memories of her mother and stories of her African warrior grandmother.

Very intriguing story beautifully written. Good listen and realized something at the end that might have been clear in beginning or maybe made clear in the end. Either way I enjoyed reflecting with new knowledge.

Historia
Nel and Sula's devotion is fierce enough to withstand bullies and the burden of a dreadful secret. It endures even after Nel has grown up to be a pillar of the black community and Sula has become a pariah. But their friendship ends in an unforgivable betrayal—or does it end? Terrifying, comic, ribald and tragic, Sula is a work that overflows with life.

It’s a good enough story. I wish more about Mattie but since it’s a true story that’s about right hearing more about Elizabeth.

Historia
Born on a plantation in Charles City, Virginia, Pheby Delores Brown has lived a relatively sheltered life. Shielded by her mother’s position as the estate’s medicine woman and cherished by the Master’s sister, she is set apart from the others on the plantation, belonging to neither world. She’d been promised freedom on her eighteenth birthday, but instead of the idyllic life she imagined with her true love, Essex Henry, Pheby is forced to leave the only home she has ever known. She unexpectedly finds herself thrust into the bowels of slavery at the infamous Devil’s Half Acre.

Interesting Enough
Revisado: 01-14-23
It was an interesting book that I finished in 2 days so it’s interesting enough. I typically don’t like when suspenseful endings jump to the future without giving details on how it happened but I enjoyed the book.

Historia
Conjure Women is a sweeping story that brings the world of the South before and after the Civil War vividly to life. Spanning eras and generations, it tells of the lives of three unforgettable women: Miss May Belle, a wise healing woman; her precocious and observant daughter, Rue, who is reluctant to follow in her mother’s footsteps as a midwife; and their master’s daughter, Varina. The secrets and bonds among these women and their community come to a head at the beginning of a war and at the birth of an accursed child.
