Historia
Beth and her gentle, kind husband Frank are happily married, but their relationship relies on the past staying buried. But when Beth’s brother-in-law shoots a dog going after their sheep, Beth doesn’t realize that the gunshot will alter the course of their lives. For the dog belonged to none other than Gabriel Wolfe, the man Beth loved as a teenager—the man who broke her heart years ago. Gabriel has returned to the village with his young son Leo, a boy who reminds Beth very much of her own son, who died in a tragic accident.

Elegant writing and romantic; perhaps too romantisized
Revisado: 05-03-25
The performance was fantastic. She captured all of the characters and voices perfectly. This is a mostly non spicy romance and slight mystery novel. There is a twist but most of the story is predictable. The novel is highly romanticized to the point of being unrealistic in parts - so, suspend reality to enjoy it. The writing is quite beautiful and intense. I have rated this higher than I might have had the writing not been so beautiful.

In October 1886, Edgar Drake receives a strange request from the British War office: he must leave his wife and his quiet life in London to travel to the jungles of Burma, where a rare Erard grand piano is in need of repair. On his journey to Burma, Edgar encounters prophets and thieves, soldiers and tale-spinners, and an enchanting woman as elusive as the surgeon-major who owns the piano will turn out to be. Edgar encounters a place more mysterious and dangerous than he could ever have imagined.

Beautiful narration; Boring Story with Single Dimensional Main Character
Revisado: 04-29-25
I really wanted to love this book. Historical fiction is my favorite genre. I am in the 7th chapter and I don’t think I can finish it. The description of the landscapes is beautiful but the story lacks plot and the main character lacked dimension. Sadly, the boat was incredibly boring.

Excellent Dystopian Novel - highly relevant given current events
Revisado: 04-01-25
The book was well structured. We share so much data with the companies and the government, it is not too much of a stretch to envision people being imprisoned for their thoughts and dreams. How much of our privacy are we willing to give up? And what happens to vulnerable people when the wrong folks get their hands on that data? The book is also a commentary on the immigrant experience and life in prison. There is a lot to dig in to!
Although this book has a sci fi, it does not get into any of the science - a little bit more about the tech would have been interesting.
I highly recommend this book - for a book with so many layers, it flowed very well and was a quick read.

Confusing but lyrical
Revisado: 09-17-24
Between the confusing names and anachronistic timeline that didn’t follow logic (characters jump decades ahead but remain the same age and then start to age in a different generation), it wasn’t my favorite book. Otherwise, the book was interesting and author had an almost musical way of speaking.

Historia
Young playwright Melina Green has just written a new work inspired by the life of her Elizabethan ancestor Emilia Bassano. But seeing it performed is unlikely, in a theater world where the playing field isn’t level for women. As Melina wonders if she dares risk failure again, her best friend takes the decision out of her hands and submits the play to a festival under a male pseudonym.

Mediocre dialogue with interesting plot
Revisado: 08-22-24
The story is interesting but the dialogue for the r British character Ian is terrible - overall I found the dialogue of all of the characters to be stilted. How many “bloody hell’s’” can a British character say? I also agree with other character’s comments that the romance between Nina and Ian diminished the storyline. However, the villainess in this story is quite good and the story of the Night Witches is cool.

Historia
Washington, DC, 1950. Everyone keeps to themselves at Briarwood House, a down-at-the-heels all-female boardinghouse in the heart of the nation’s capital where secrets hide behind white picket fences. But when the lovely, mysterious widow Grace March moves into the attic room, she draws her oddball collection of neighbors into unlikely friendship. Grace’s weekly attic-room dinner parties and window-brewed sun tea become a healing balm on all their lives, but she hides a terrible secret of her own.

Unique Blend of Characters
Revisado: 08-17-24
I enjoyed this book because it pulled upon numerous and unusual historical facts of the 1950s. The characters’ backstories were interesting. My only critique is that although all of the women received their own chapters- some characters were less developed than others. Overall - a good story though!

Millions of Amor Towles fans are in for a treat as he shares some of his shorter fiction: six stories based in New York City and a novella set in Golden Age Hollywood. The New York stories, most of which take place around the year 2000, consider the fateful consequences that can spring from brief encounters and the delicate mechanics of compromise that operate at the heart of modern marriages.

Historia
Sometimes heartbreaking, sometimes deeply joyous, The House on Mango Street tells the story of Esperanza Cordero, whose neighborhood is one of harsh realities and harsh beauty. Esperanza doesn't want to belong, not to her rundown neighborhood, and not to the low expectations the world has for her. Esperanza's story is that of a young girl coming into her power, and inventing for herself what she will become.
