Historia
Robert Sapolsky’s Behave, his now classic account of why humans do good and why they do bad, pointed toward an unsettling conclusion: We may not grasp the precise marriage of nature and nurture that creates the physics and chemistry at the base of human behavior, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. Now, in Determined, Sapolsky takes his argument all the way, mounting a brilliant (and in his inimitable way, delightful) full-frontal assault on the pleasant fantasy that there is some separate self telling our biology what to do.

Difficult but thought-provoking
Revisado: 12-30-23
First off, the narrator does a great job dealing with a lot of highly detailed scientific information. I didn’t particularly enjoy trying to wrap my brain around all of the acronyms, but I have to give him credit for maintaining an energetic tone. As for the book itself, I had a hard time with Sapolsky’s theory about free will; however, he does a nice job in the last chapters parsing out the problems his ideas would face and how we as a society need to view the world. I appreciate his tone and his willingness to deal with the counterarguments. I won’t say I understood everything, but I will say it makes me think.

Useful Course
Revisado: 08-31-22
I've been a high school rhet/comp teacher for years, but I was hoping to find new ways to explain things or just new stuff in general to use with my kids. I found both in this course. Professor Drout's delivery and explanations are excellent. I also find the course guide to be very useful and thorough. Because this was recorded in 2006, some of his examples might seem surprising or dated in 2022, but they still illustrate his point well. If you're new to the study of rhetoric or if you're just looking for a refresher, this is a great choice.

Nora Stephens' life is books—she’s read them all—and she is not that type of heroine. Not the plucky one, not the laidback dream girl, and especially not the sweetheart. In fact, the only people Nora is a heroine for are her clients, for whom she lands enormous deals as a cutthroat literary agent, and her beloved little sister Libby.

This is a fantastic read. I love how the author uses romance tropes in an unusual way, especially Nora’s character. I laughed and cried through this. Don’t pass it up!

In the middle of the night, a woman wakes to find her beloved city engulfed in flames. Ten seemingly endless years of conflict between the Greeks and the Trojans are over. Troy has fallen. From the Trojan women whose fates now lie in the hands of the Greeks, to the Amazon princess who fought Achilles on their behalf, to Penelope awaiting the return of Odysseus, to the three goddesses whose feud started it all, these are the stories of the women whose lives, loves, and rivalries were forever altered by this long and tragic war.

Haynes’ story is of the women who are pretty much or completely behind the scenes of the Trojan War. It’s powerful and inventive, and Haynes’ performance is outstanding.

Historia
The tellers of Greek myths—historically men—have routinely sidelined the female characters. When they do take a larger role, women are often portrayed as monstrous, vengeful or just plain evil—like Pandora, the woman of eternal scorn and damnation whose curiosity is tasked with causing all the world’s suffering and wickedness when she opened that forbidden box. But, as Natalie Haynes reveals, in ancient Greek myths there was no box. It was a jar . . . which is far more likely to tip over.

Pandora’s Jar
Revisado: 05-01-22
This is a new favorite. I was a little worried about Haynes’ delivery at first, but after a short time, her passion for her topic comes through. Her enthusiasm makes the listen that much better, and her dual focus on the classical stories and their modern iterations is eye-opening. Absolutely recommend!

What is power and who is allowed to wield it? Why is female power so rare and, often, so feared? What can the women who gained power in the ancient world teach us about the contemporary world and our modern ideas of gender, authority, and equality? Listeners will explore these and other questions as you travel back to the ancient world and uncover the stories of remarkable women who overcame a host of barriers to wield power in a male-dominated world.

Engaging perspective
Revisado: 06-18-21
Cooney’s argument about women in power is persuasive and interesting. She sets the framework for the argument in the very effective first lecture and sticks to it to the end. She also makes solid connections between the women she uses as case studies and our modern political environment. This is definitely not an unbiased recitation of historical fact, but it is thoughtful and relevant. I highly recommend it.

Throughout history, women have played integral roles in family, society, religion, government, war - in short, in all aspects of human civilization. Their contributions have often shaped history and shifted the axis of power for later generations of women. And yet, unearthing their stories from the historical record has often been a challenge. In Powerful Women of the Medieval World, Professor Dorsey Armstrong will introduce you to 10 amazing women who played vital roles in the Middle Ages.

Difficult to finish
Revisado: 06-12-21
First, Froggatt’s narration of this book is fantastic, and that elevates my “overall” rating. The story itself, though, is overly complicated and tedious as it jumps from time period to time period and between narrators and perspectives.

In this award-winning Audible Studios production, Trevor Noah tells his wild coming-of-age tale during the twilight of apartheid in South Africa. It’s a story that begins with his mother throwing him from a moving van to save him from a potentially fatal dispute with gangsters, then follows the budding comedian’s path to self-discovery through episodes both poignant and comical.

Born a Crime
Revisado: 02-08-20
This is fascinating and very well-done. I don't follow The Daily Show regularly and didn't know much about Noah before listening to this, but I don't think that's necessary. Noah's stories of his growing up in post-Apartheid South Africa are eye-opening. He puts into perspective what most of us in the US know only from news stories. It would be a terrific story even if it had been from a unknown person rather than a famous comedian. I do highly recommend listening to the book because his facility with languages and his impersonations of his family add so much to the story.

The Book of Lost Things
Revisado: 12-29-19
The reader did a great job with this — lots of different voices, unique to each character. Connolly’s portrayal of David at the beginning of the book was heart wrenching, and, in some ways, the best part. The end of the book was also very moving. I gave it three stars, though, because, like other reviewers, I felt like the story could have been much tighter. Connolly uses so many different fairy tales and tropes that it becomes tedious. Also, like others have said, some of the descriptions are unnecessarily graphic. I wouldn’t go out of my way to recommend it, but if you like fantasy and repurposed fairy tales, you might enjoy this.
