Vampy Vamp Vamps
Revisado: 05-22-21
It’s the first book in a long series and that’s clear because it really dumped a ton of characters and world rules onto me. I sometimes got a little lost in it, but I’m intrigued and on my way to get the second book now. I’m a huge Anne Rice fan and the vampires in this don’t seem to disappoint. It seems like a rich world and I’m excited to hear more.
I will say that some of the narration took getting used to because the narrator has to switch between many accents...but after the first half of the book I was already immersed and not worried about it.

Historia
In In Order to Live, Yeonmi Park shines a light not just into the darkest corners of life in North Korea, describing the deprivation and deception she endured and which millions of North Korean people continue to endure to this day, but also onto her own most painful and difficult memories. She tells with bravery and dignity for the first time the story of how she and her mother were betrayed and sold into sexual slavery in China and forced to suffer terrible psychological and physical hardship before they finally made their way to Seoul, South Korea - and to freedom.

Resilience
Revisado: 02-01-21
I have always been terrified of North Korea and this story only feeds into that. The mind control. However, I feel such hope reading Yeonmi’s story! She helps remind everyone of the humanity struggling to survive in the country. This story forces the reader to look at the day to day realities of a human being trying to live the only life she has ever known in a devastated country. Heartbreaking, but also by the end an inspiring tale. I finished this book once, but I know I will listen again.
I am shocked by the resilience of Yeonmi at such a young age. I found myself jolted into shock EVERYTIME she would remind me how old she was at each point in the story.
I will say the narrator is a little tough to listen to because of the drawn out monotone way of reading. However, I upped the speed of her narration and after a while it did not detract from the story.

Historia
Within These Walls is the powerful memoir of Rev. Carroll Pickett, who spent fifteen years as the death house chaplain at "The Walls," the Huntsville unit of the Texas prison system. In that capacity, Reverend Pickett ministered to ninety-five men before they were put to death by lethal injection. They came with sinister nicknames like "The Candy Man" and "The Good Samaritan Killer," some contrite, some angry -- a few who might even have been innocent.

Emotional & Eye Opening
Revisado: 12-26-19
This book was recommended by a coworker who happens to be related to Rev. Pickett. I went in with no expectations and I now leave this audiobook knowing that I will listen again and again. The raw emotions and heart wrenching insight draws you in and keeps you engaged until the very last spoken word. This man showed great bravery in his dedication to his work. What an extremely difficult topic to not only write about, but to live in the midst of for such a long portion of one’s life. The narrator, Tom Pile, did a great job here. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone that has a steady enough emotional capacity to hear the stories Rev. Pickett has to share.

Historia
People say Beartown is finished. A tiny community nestled deep in the forest, it is slowly losing ground to the ever encroaching trees. But down by the lake stands an old ice rink, built generations ago by the working men who founded this town. And in that ice rink is the reason people in Beartown believe tomorrow will be better than today. Their junior ice hockey team is about to compete in the national semifinals, and they actually have a shot at winning.

Are we sure this town isn’t real? WOW
Revisado: 04-21-19
This is the third book I have read by Backman and I truly can’t pick a favorite! I have begun to list him as one of my favorite authors and this book just further proved why he belongs there. I am (as always) beyond impressed with his ability to create a town full of characters that each have such depth and reality you can’t believe they are fictional. Each chapter brings something meaningful to the story. Backman is skilled in the art of using subtle words and phrasing to bring about intense emotions. You WILL find something to connect to with his writing because he writes about humans. His stories are real and emotional. I can’t emphasize how REAL this all feels. He somehow manages to write simply about complicated parts of living and relationships. I can not recommend him and ANY of his stories enough. Beartown has left a mark on my mind that will never leave. Do yourself a favor and read about this town. Once I started listening I could not get away from it.
