Historia
In this “monumental and impressive” biography, Max Boot, the distinguished political columnist, illuminates the untold story of Ronald Reagan, revealing the man behind the mythology. Drawing on interviews with over one hundred of the fortieth president’s aides, friends, and family members, as well as thousands of newly available documents, Boot provides “the best biography of Ronald Reagan to date” (Robert Mann).

Pretty good book, ok narrator
Revisado: 04-11-25
I’m maybe a little too anti-Reagan to love this book, but it was overall a strong (if occasionally surface-level) book. I found the reading hard to follow at times, but generally pretty good.

Historia
So begins Chloé Cooper Jones’s bold, revealing account of moving through the world in a body that looks different than most. Jones learned early on to factor “pain calculations” into every plan, every situation. Born with a rare congenital condition called sacral agenesis which affects both her stature and gait, her pain is physical. But there is also the pain of being judged and pitied for her appearance, of being dismissed as “less than.”

Killer story, killer narrator
Revisado: 01-13-25
I’m a bit biased because I know CCJ in real life, but she is a consummate storyteller and her passion and brilliance come through beautifully in this memoir

Great story, odd performance
Revisado: 03-13-24
It’s a great book, but for some reason the reader has made very odd choices—a very flat affect, bad accents/impersonations, a pace slow enough to lull you into not paying full attention to a book that moves through info very quickly.

Historia
J. Robert Oppenheimer was one of the iconic figures of the 20th century, a brilliant physicist who led the effort to build the atomic bomb but later confronted the moral consequences of scientific progress. When he proposed international controls over atomic materials, opposed the development of the hydrogen bomb, and criticized plans for a nuclear war, his ideas were anathema to powerful advocates of a massive nuclear buildup during the anti-Communist hysteria of the early 1950s.

Good book, bad recording
Revisado: 08-01-23
The book itself is great and insightful, but it seems that the narrator Jeff Cummings had a somewhat flexible recording set-up as the quality & tenor of the audio can and will shift rapidly multiple times per chapter, sometimes mid-sentence, and sometimes in quick succession, a la that one Simpsons clip of homer being taken out of context on a talk show. It was very distracting for me at least, so I thought I should mention it so people would know going forward

Historia
By the time Rock Hudson's death in 1985 alerted all America to the danger of the AIDS epidemic, the disease had spread across the nation, killing thousands of people and emerging as the greatest health crisis of the 20th century. America faced a troubling question: What happened? How was this epidemic allowed to spread so far before it was taken seriously?

Good book, bad reader
Revisado: 01-13-23
The book is pretty good. The writing is pretty turgid and condescending at points, but it’s well researched and very informative.
That being said, the reader is pretty bad—weird pauses and intonations, funny “official” voices, and mispronunciations abound.

Historia
Master of the Senate, told with an abundance of rich detail that could only have come from Caro’s peerless research, is both a galvanizing portrait of the man himself—the titan of Capital Hill, volcanic, mesmerizing—and a definitive and revelatory study of the workings and personal and legislative power.

Issues have been fixed!
Revisado: 12-08-22
A lot of the issues people discuss in the other reviews—including chapters being repeated and frequent notices to flip the tape—have all been fixed! Whatever the issues may have been, there are none now in this impeccable report of LBJ’s Senate years.

Historia
Giovanna’s pretty face is changing, turning ugly, at least so her father thinks. Giovanna, he says, is looking more like her Aunt Vittoria every day. But can it be true? Is she really changing? Will she turn out like her despised Aunt Vittoria, a woman she hardly knows but whom her mother and father have spent their whole lives avoiding and deriding? There must be a mirror somewhere in which she can see herself as she truly is.

It’s camp
Revisado: 10-19-22
Marisa Tomei gives such a bizarre performance full of overacting and weird choices that the whole thing becomes basically pure camp. It sounds like she did the recording in a single take after being spending three hours in a traffic jam on the way to the studio, just pure anger as the base emotion. Also, as other have noted, yes the voices she uses for the characters are silly. I want to give five stars but I know that all the times I burst out laughing were unintentional
