Historia
July 30, 1945 - The USS Indianapolis and its 1,196-man crew is making its way toward a small island in the South Pacific. The ship is sailing unescorted, assured by headquarters the waters are safe. It is midnight, and Marine Edgar Harrell and several others have sacked out on deck rather than spend the night in their hot and muggy quarters below. Fresh off a top-secret mission to deliver uranium for the atomic bombs that would ultimately end World War II, they are unaware their ship is being watched.

Famous survival event from a Gospel perspective
Revisado: 06-09-24
Being a fan of Jaws and the monologue of the USS Indianapolis, this particular maritime event always peaked my interest. I stumbled on this book by wondering, was there any believers that survived the Indy disaster? and lo and behold I found this book. I was prepared for a watered down version of trusting God or the gospel; so I was surprised at the presence of accurate scripture and clear presentation of the Gospel. I bought a hard copy and read that first then when I saw this in audible I gave it a listen.
My only critique was it felt like the reader was reading very slow, and near the end I cranked up the speed. But all in all great book and audible book, would heartily recommend.

Amazing production good additions to the story
Revisado: 01-23-24
The performances and mixing were superb 👌 very immersive and captivating. The story in itself was a very good retelling of the story the movie is based on but some creative liberties were taken that added and took away from the story. All together a high recommend.
Spoiler warning:
The ending is definitely more satisfying than the movies ending. It was a good surprise that I will refrain from ruining it.
A side plot that I thought was a good and bad addition was the Caleb/Naomi plot line where it is implied that child abuse has taken place but the community has ‘forgiven’ it but refuses to take it to the proper authorities. This is amazing for why Rachel desires to take Samuel to another district (in the movie it seems like they want to get away from the sorrow of the husband/father dying) to escape from the corruption going on in the community. In a way they are witnesses to violence and corruption in their own community before coming across the murder in the city.
The downside to this addition is it feels like there is now more push for Rachel to leave from the audience. At the end of the day, justice hasn’t been served in the community. Even John mentions in a nutshell “bad people that do such crimes are bound to do them again”. So her reason to stay in the community because it is familiar and she feels like she can protect him feels alittle stretched. This plot line answers alot of questions from the movie, but it doesn’t help the audience understand why she would stay in a community that doesn’t care about justice.

Why would anyone want to watch horror movies? Why would Christians, in particular, bother with the genre? In Fear Not!, critic Josh Larsen makes the case that monster movies, creature features, slashers, and other fright films artfully reflect our deep worries in a way that resonates with the Christian experience. Combining critical observation and theological reflection, Larsen devotes each chapter to a different horror subgenre, connecting that subgenre to a commonly shared fear.

Amazing dive a tough subject
Revisado: 11-30-23
Josh Larson does a wonderful job of bringing the gems the horror genre has for both Christians and non Christians. This book has helped me learn what does it mean to be a mature Christian in the realm of viewing the horror genre. Larson did a great job in diving into the main genres, and the popular movies that make up those genres while pointing to the messages that resemble scripture. I have read the hard copy and just listened to this rendition and was still worth while.
I appreciated Larson narrating so it felt like a conversation from a person who loves movies and loves Christ. My only knock is at times there were long pauses in between chapters but amazing work!! Definitely recommending to friends and family.

Movies do more than tell a good story. They are expressions of raw emotion, naked vulnerability, and unbridled rage. They often function in the same way as prayers, communicating our deepest longings and joys to a God who hears each and every one. In this captivating book, Filmspotting co-host Josh Larsen brings a critic's unique perspective to how movies function as expressions to God of lament, praise, joy, confession, and more.

Josh Larson brings a unique perspective on film and faith. As a Christian that is seeking to understand the world of creating art (that is not corny and cheesy) yet points to the Gospel and the Ultimate artist and Creator; this was a book I was referred to and was glad to dive into. My only low knocks against its rating are due to the monotonous reader (I would have preferred Larson read it himself so it’s more of a conversation) and at times I feel like he goes on in his explanation. I also wish he would have done more movies that are more popular.
Other then that this is a great content book what I wish I would have physically read which I think I would have enjoyed more.

It was ok
Revisado: 11-22-23
The story in itself is a great idea. A modern day treasure hunt. But the narrator nearly had me putting the book within the first hour. HE TALKS LIKE THIS! FOR EVERY SINGLE SENTENCE! From the story perspective the main character I wish would go away. The ending is slapped on there with very little attempts to make it satisfying. Questions are left in answered. Therefore, the rating. It is still a fun adventure story, but you have to get through Sanders (gag) and nearly attempted rape scene.
(Spoiler)
Sanders is almost unbelievably selfish. He has no problem having an affair on his wife, abandoning his kids and “gets over it” He is worse then Brody in the book Jaws. Im trying to figure out if Benchley intended to make his main characters hatable cause right now for me, he is 2/2. I wish the book were to focus on their sea captain friend Tres. He is almost a Jack Reacher type, and he could have done a series focusing on Tres and this random couple comes to him for help.
