Historia
Glucose, or blood sugar, is a tiny molecule in our body that has a huge impact on our health. It enters our bloodstream through the starchy or sweet foods we eat. Ninety percent of us suffer from too much glucose in our system—and most of us don’t know it. The symptoms? Cravings, fatigue, infertility, hormonal issues, acne, wrinkles. Drawing on cutting-edge science and her own pioneering research, biochemist Jessie Inchauspé offers ten simple, surprising hacks to help you balance your glucose levels and reverse your symptoms—without going on a diet or giving up the foods you love.

Wish I Had Discovered This Sooner
Revisado: 04-01-24
I first came across Jessie through her Glucose Goddess YouTube channel, but the added context in the book makes the advice even more compelling.
I've tried the hacks for two days and I'm already noticing a huge difference in my mood and energy levels.
Everyone needs to read (or listen to this book) because regardless of the struggle, glucose spikes are likely the culprit.

In America, lipstick is the foundation of empires; it’s a signature of identity; it’s propaganda, self-expression, oppression, freedom, and rebellion. It’s a multibillion-dollar industry and one of our most iconic accessories of gender. This engaging and entertaining history of lipstick from the colonies to the present day will give listeners a new view of the little tube’s big place in modern America, from defining the middle class to building Fortune 500 businesses to being present at Stonewall and being engineered for space travel.

A Witty and Concise Overview of Lipstick's History
Revisado: 10-03-23
I appreciated that the book's chapters are divided by decades since I was interested in the early history up to the 1930s.
However, the writing was so engaging that I finished the entire book. Glad I did because I learned a lot.
It's got great insights into the cultural zeitgeist of each decade while using interesting examples to back them up.
I also appreciated the author's effort to include diversity.
I would highly recommend 👌

There are plenty of other elements about real-life pirates that are simply fiction. But what about the real history of pirates - is it worth exploring, and why? The history of the Golden Age of Piracy, the one that has shaped the modern conception of a pirate, is complex and long, with lots of information to cover.

I've read a few books on piracy and if you're just after the facts, this audiobook does an excellent job condensing the several decades that constitute the Golden Age. Excellent narration and engaging.

Historia
It is Egypt in 2000 BC, where death gives meaning to life. At the foot of a cliff lies the broken, twisted body of Nofret, concubine to a ka-priest. Young, beautiful, and venomous, most agree that it was fate - she deserved to die like a snake! But at her father's house on the banks of the Nile, the priest's daughter Renisenb believes that the woman's death is suspicious. Increasingly, she becomes convinced that the source of evil lurks within their household - and watches helplessly as the family's passions explode in murder.

Entertaining and Instructive!
Revisado: 02-15-23
I'm a huge fan of Christie's cozy mysteries set in the 1920s and 1930s, so hesitated before purchasing a mystery set in the distant past. However, I'm also really interested in Egyptology and was curious.
I soon found myself completely engrossed and looking forward to repetitive tasks like doing the dishes so I could steal time to listen.
Constructing an engaging story with well defined characters is enough of a challenge, but doing it while also reconstructing an ancient civilization with historical accuracy is quite a feat. Christie succeeds beautifully. I have a better sense of daily life after having read it.
Kudos to Emilia Fox for her ability to interpret the characters and make each unique.

Historia
If Stanley Featherstonehaugh Ukridge had a fiver for every dodgy scheme he had ever floated, he would be a very rich man indeed. In these ten stories he tries every way of making money, from writing political slogans to opening a college for dogs. In his own eyes, Ukridge is a Great Man and a visionary. In ours, he is English literature's most delightful chancer and one of Wodehouse's greatest comic creations: charming, ambitious, persuasive, optimistic and almost always disastrous.

The main aim of detective stories is to entertain, but the best cast a light on human behaviour and display both literary ambition and accomplishment. Even unpretentious detective stories, written for unashamedly commercial reasons, can give us clues to the past and give us insight into a long-vanished world that, for all its imperfections, continues to fascinate.

An Excellent Survey of Classic Crime
Revisado: 02-10-21
Edwards' knowledge of classic detective fiction runs as deep as his passion for the genre.
I appreciated the thematic groupings and his willingness to venture a little beyond the twenties and thirties.
I have a long list of titles to read beyond favorites like Christie, Sayers, and Allingham--if I can track them down!

It’s the perfect time to curl up in front of a crackling fire with these wintry whodunits from the legendary Agatha Christie. But beware of deadly snowdrifts and dangerous gifts, poisoned meals and mysterious guests. This chilling compendium of short stories - some featuring beloved detectives Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple - is an essential omnibus for Christie fans.
