Historia
When the enslaved Jim overhears that he is about to be sold to a man in New Orleans, separated from his wife and daughter forever, he decides to hide on nearby Jackson Island until he can formulate a plan. Meanwhile, Huck Finn has faked his own death to escape his violent father, recently returned to town. As all readers of American literature know, thus begins the dangerous and transcendent journey by raft down the Mississippi River toward the elusive and too-often-unreliable promise of the Free States and beyond.

Absolute waste of time . Contrived.
Revisado: 02-20-25
Total waste of time. Excellent reader wasted on this pretentious nonsense. James’s lessons in linguistics are hilarious. Straight from my grad school on Applied Linguistics. Complete nonsense from the lips of any 19th century person.

First published in 1900, when Thomas Mann was 25, Buddenbrooks is a minutely imagined chronicle of four generations of a North German mercantile family - a work so true to life that it scandalized the author’s former neighbours in his native Lübeck.

BEST READER! BRAVO!
Revisado: 12-06-22
Unbelievable talent of David Rinteul! THE Mr. Darcy by the way. The book is astonishingly mature from the then very young author.

Historia
A clear-eyed account of the realities of life in America’s overlooked heartland, The View from Flyover Country is a piercing critique of the labor exploitation, race relations, gentrification, media bias, and other aspects of the post-employment economy that gave rise to a president who rules like an autocrat. The View from Flyover Country is necessary listening for anyone who believes that the only way for America to fix its problems is to first discuss them with honesty and compassion.

Whiny tone is intolerable
Revisado: 12-06-22
I so wanted to care. The author’s reading is intolerable. Whiny monotone. It actually affects her message. Her lack of judgement as to her presentation makes me wonder whether her subject matter is objective.

Historia
We plan, as the old proverb says, and God laughs. But most of us don't find it all that funny when things go wrong. Most of us want love, a nice home, good work and happy children. Many of us grew up with parents who made these things look relatively easy and assumed we would get them, too. So what do you do if you don't? What do you do when you feel you've messed it all up and your friends seem to be doing just fine? For Christina Patterson, it was her job as a journalist that kept her going through the ups and downs of life. And then she lost that, too.

Like having a 9 hr drink with friend
Revisado: 01-11-20
I found the author to be often courageously honest and not gratuitously so. The converging struggles she describes often get so bad that one wants to look away -- like at a picture of a mother holding a starving child -- because you just can't afford to identify with her. Yet Christina did not look away from her own trials. Narration is very pleasant. Please audiobooks, realize that narration can make or break a book.
