Historia
Jane Austen’s most popular novel, originally published in 1813, some 17 years after it was first written, presents the Bennet family of Longbourn. Against the background of gossipy Mrs. Bennet and the detached Mr. Bennet, the quest is on for husbands for the five daughters. The spotlight falls on Elizabeth, second eldest, who is courted by Mr. Darcy, though initially she is more concerned with the fate of her other sisters. This marvelous account of family life in Regency England is read with customary panache by Juliet Stevenson.

Historia
Gravity affects every aspect of our physical being, but there’s a psychological force just as powerful - yet almost nobody has heard of it. It’s responsible for bringing groups of people together and pulling them apart, making certain goals attractive to some and not to others, and fueling cycles of anxiety and conflict. In Wanting, Luke Burgis draws on the work of French polymath René Girard to bring this hidden force to light and reveals how it shapes our lives and societies.

Unsatisfying take on otherwise fascinating subject
Revisado: 09-29-21
The narration audio quality is loud and clear. That’s the best thing I can say about this audiobook. After about twenty to thirty minutes the narrator’s delivery becomes jarringly predictable within a narrow range of badly acted enthusiasm. This resonates with the content of the book itself with its irrelevant, very current and soon to age late 2010s/2021 cultural references and most irritating of all, the author’s anecdotes from being the CEO of a failed startup and being unsatisfied despite living well. This is a superficial treatment of René Girard’s life work peppered with incessant techbro startup culture interruptions. Look elsewhere for a better treatment of Girard. I’d rate it lower still if it had not introduced me to something important, but I don’t feel any smarter or wiser after investing nine hours listening to it. Perhaps I suffer from mimetametic desire to understand mimetic desire as others do. The author is smart and does seem to still have a better book on the subject trapped inside somewhere. I hope he writes it eventually. In the meantime start with Girard’s own books first.

Historia
This is an ideal introduction to the ideas of a man whom many regard as the greatest thinker of our time. Here we encounter the stages in the development of his unique philosophy of consciousness, his key intellectual breakthroughs, his theory of history, and his diagnosis of the political ills of the modern age. The book provides a veritable catalog of the thinkers who created the intellectual foundation of the twentieth century.

A stately performance marred by mispronunciations
Revisado: 08-29-21
Voegelin's text itself is unassailable, and Mays' English narration likewise, a thick regal basso that sounds like stout tastes. His German and French pronunciation is jarring, however. Still this is that one out of twenty Audible books I look forward to hearing again.

Historia
The great adventure story tells of Odysseus, a veteran of the Trojan War, who - through a landscape peopled with monsters, sea nymphs, evil enchantresses, and vengeful gods - makes his tortuous way home to his faithful wife, Penelope. Shipwrecked numerous times, faced with apparently insurmountable obstacles, offered the temptations of ease, comfort, and even immortality, Odysseus remains steadfast and determined. Themes of courage and perseverance, fidelity and fortitude.

impeccable performance, missing introduction
Revisado: 07-18-21
This audiobook lacks any place, introduction or other discussion found in the print book. But the choice of narrator is unassailable, and the translation flows like honeyed wine.
