Historia
Collected here are the stories, poems, and religious writings that preceded and helped form the science fiction and fantasy genres. The collection explores the key imaginative roots and their later literary permutations. The author list alone reads like a literary who’s who and includes many writers not primarily known for their forays into the fantastic. Organized by topic rather than simple chronology, this volume allows the listener to trace the history of robots, aliens, and apocalypses up to some of their most recent manifestations.

Good for myth lovers but not for Sci-Fi lovers
Revisado: 03-29-19
Liked 20% of the stories, found another 20% interesting and skipped through the rest. Life's to short! I am not interested in horror or myth. Some fantasy is good. So 60% of this collection was not enjoyable. Some of these forgotten works should remain so.

Historia
A dying planet, dried up and hostile; a planet of countless years and countless mysteries.
When the Terrans came, they found a world of dead sea-bottoms, lost civilizations, and secretive tribes bitterly resenting their intrusion on the fading glory of an ancient planet. The Earthmen looked down upon the crumbling ruins of a brilliant culture and laughed at the stories of invincible gods and forgotten magic lingering in the forbidden cities of Jekkara, Barrakesh, Valkis...they would not laugh for long!

Leigh Brackett can write.
Revisado: 02-12-18
Brackett was a prolific SF writer. Starting in the 1940s, she wrote a couple of dozen SF books and made living for years writing short stories for multiple pulp SF magazines. Eventually she wrote for TV and film. She is one of the nearly forgotten pioneers of Classic SF.
As usual Brackett has surprised me. This book is better then the average 3 star pulp SF. I suspect that these stories were originally published in one of the pulps. Perhaps not. Either way I was mostly disinterested when I started but drawn in by the good writing.
These stories vividly show times and places that would be fascinating and terrible to visit.

Historia
Jazz Bashara is a criminal. Well, sort of. Life on Artemis, the first and only city on the moon, is tough if you're not a rich tourist or an eccentric billionaire. So smuggling in the occasional harmless bit of contraband barely counts, right? Not when you've got debts to pay and your job as a porter barely covers the rent. Everything changes when Jazz sees the chance to commit the perfect crime, with a reward too lucrative to turn down.

The Mote In God's Eye is their acknowledged masterpiece, an epic novel of mankind's first encounter with alien life that transcends the genre. No lesser an authority than Robert A. Heinlein called it "possibly the finest science fiction novel I have ever read".

Audio book hurt by narrator.
Revisado: 08-27-16
Is there anything you would change about this book?
Yes, the narrator.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Mote in God's Eye?
Good book and could have been a good audio book with different narration.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
Shouted everything like he's reading to 7th graders or is a 7th grader. He could turn "Star Trek" into "Lost in Space" I had no idea that all conversations in future worlds will be monotone shouting. It sounded like a bad high school play. "YES DORIS,....... I WILL GET THE PHONE"
Did The Mote in God's Eye inspire you to do anything?
Never buy anymore audio books with this narrator.

Historia
From tales of chivalrous knights to the barbarity of trial by ordeal, no era has been a greater source of awe, horror, and wonder than the Middle Ages. In handsomely crafted prose and with the grace and authority of his extraordinary gift for narrative history, William Manchester leads us from a civilization tottering on the brink of collapse to the grandeur of its rebirth, the Renaissance.

Discounts the last 100 years of research
Revisado: 01-02-16
Would you try another book from William Manchester and/or Barrett Whitener?
No, this guy is a hack.
Would you ever listen to anything by William Manchester again?
If stuck on an island and this was all I had.
Which scene was your favorite?
Good story teller but light on facts.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Anger, this book was listed as factual.
Any additional comments?
Even this author admits the label "dark ages" applies as much to our knowledge of the period then of the period itself. If this is your only source then like the author you will remain in darkness.
Let me sum up his thesis:
All of Europe was a social utopia on earth, under Roman rule. There was no disease, pain, slaves, war, starvation or death. Then Rome turned Christian and the next 1000 were nothing but ignorance and want.
Even if you ignore his slant the historical errors are many. None could read and everyone was proud if it.
