What kind of sick mind comes up with this stuff?
Revisado: 02-19-25
Full of weird torture and screaming victims who aren’t saved but die screaming their brains out. Definitely not for kiddos. This author has a depressing view of the world. It’s too bad because the overall story is adventurous and could be have been fun. Also has some weird scenes where animals that are emphasized to be female are tortured and harassed- some bully kids throw knives at a zebra who could have been referred to as an “it” but is repetitively called “she” as in “hold her down” etc. very creepy.

One of a kind heartwarming
Revisado: 12-13-24
Charming characters and fun adventure. I love the lessons little Renny learns at the end of each book, heartwarming and precious for children and adults alike. The narrator has the perfect voice for this story, simply a cozy book all around.

Historia
During a sleepover, a letter comes to five children begging for the urgent assistance of Esther Mettlestone-Staranise; she must arrive before 10am on Monday to save an entire town of elves trapped under layers of silver. And a regular-size boy who, soon after seeing the children, dies. Oscar is that boy who skipped school in our world on Monday to skate, and found himself in the city of the elves at just the wrong moment: He fled as fast as he could, but not fast enough because the silver wave struck him and he fell down dead. And that's just the beginning!

Historia
Bronte Mettlestone is 10 years old when her parents are killed by pirates. This does not bother her particularly: Her parents ran away to have adventures when she was a baby. She has been raised by her aunt Isabelle, with assistance from the butler, and has spent a pleasant childhood of afternoon teas and riding lessons. Now, however, her parents have left detailed instructions for Bronte in their will. (Instructions that, annoyingly, have been reinforced with faery cross-stitch, which means that if she doesn't complete them, terrible things could happen!)

Historia
The town of Spindrift is frequented by all kinds of Shadow Mages and charlatans. It's also home to the Orphanage School, where Finlay lives with Glim, Taya, and Eli. Just outside town is the painfully posh Brathelthwaite Boarding School, home to Honey Bee, Hamish, and Victor, Duke of Ainsley. When the two schools compete at the Spindrift Tournament, the stakes are high, tensions are higher, and some people are out to win at any cost. Before long, the orphans and the boarding school kids are at each other's throats.

This is the second book in the series don’t get confused
Revisado: 04-25-24
Fun escape and great adventure story. This
Author is so creative, a true story teller.
Also, this is the same book as the “Slightly Alarming Tale of the Whispering Wars” - wish they hadn’t changed the name, was a bit confusing.
Finley can be a little unsympathetic sometimes, wish it wasn’t the old trope of the rough rude boy whom you are supposed to like simply because boys are allowed to be that way. Still, overall clever telling and good characters.

Historia
Esther is a middle child, in her own mind a pale reflection of siblings who are bright, shining stars. She’s content to go back to school, do her best, hang out with her friends, and let others take care of things. But her best friends aren’t at school when she gets there. Why didn’t they tell her they wouldn’t be coming back? But stuff like that happens. And it’s bad luck that her new teacher makes Esther the butt of all kinds of jokes. Mrs. Pollock is rumored to be an ogre - and maybe she is one. Could be. Then things go from unfortunate to outright dangerous.

A little sadder than last two books
Revisado: 04-25-24
Overall it’s a good message and it ends satisfyingly but most of the book has poor little Esther being bullied by her teacher. Kind of a tough read, wish there had been more light parts. Still worth the read - you can can always skip some of the bullying.
The author is an excellent writer and story teller and the overall message to young readers is still a good one.

Enjoyable to the last
Revisado: 01-24-23
Hugh Grant is an excellent narrator. You forget that it's him half the time, he does the separate voices of each character so well.
The story itself is extremely enjoyable, not nearly so sappy as one generally remembers it.
