Entertaining listen but one bad narrator
Revisado: 04-05-25
Great premise. I enjoyed the book going back and forth between time. I really disliked the narrator for Nella. I thought she was awful. During her chapters I sped up the audio. Not sure what she was going for but the excruciatingly slow and monotone drawl was hard to listen to.

Well written and enjoyable mystery. Best narration I’ve heard in a long time. The female narrator also performed male voices really well, which females often have a hard time doing.

Revisado: 11-12-24
I am an Asian and have a journalism degree. While I was a young student I was heavily inspired by Connie Chung. She is just as smart, strong, hardworking, and as funny as I thought she would be! I loved listening to her tell me her inspiring story. I was sad when it was over. Thanks Connie Chung!

Historia
Now reduced to a schoolyard chant, the Hope family murders shocked the Maine coast one bloody night in 1929. While most people assume seventeen-year-old Lenora was responsible, the police were never able to prove it. Other than her denial after the killings, she has never spoken publicly about that night, nor has she set foot outside Hope’s End, the cliffside mansion where the massacre occurred.

What a convoluted mess
Revisado: 05-24-24
I was really disappointed because I thought this book was better-written than Sager’s other books, but the storyline is a big mess at the end. Some of the actions of the characters or parts of the plot didn’t make sense. Narrators were very good.

Not one of her best
Revisado: 09-06-23
I love Lisa Jewell but I don’t think this is one for f her best. She certainly know how to spin a twisty tale. I gave it four stars for narration just because I love Nicola Walker. The other main female narrator had this sort of bothersome intonation.

Historia
Roger Stringer grew up in rural Mississippi, hunting and eating everything from deer to rabbits. When he had two sons, Zac and Justin, he gave them guns and took them to the woods as well. Then one day when the boys were home alone, he got a call from Zac that Justin had been shot. What follows is an intimate and gripping memoir about the shooting’s aftermath. The story moves between the perspectives of Roger and Zac as they take us through their journey of betrayal, redemption, and ultimately confrontation with a company that had kept its corruption a secret for decades.

This is a compelling by and heartbreaking story told so articulately by two people who lived it. Mr. Stringer and his son are so honest and eloquent in telling their story. I hung on to every word.

Not much. Narration bad.
Revisado: 11-27-22
I found myself trying to get through this book as quickly as possible not because it was so good, but I just wanted to get it over with and find out what happens. Neither great nor terrible. The narration however was awful. The narrator’s voice for one character in particular was so hard to listen to. She kept speaking like she was in a whisper and had no breath. I wanted to yell at her to speak up.

Historia
In late October 1846, the last wagon train of that year's westward migration stopped overnight before resuming its arduous climb over the Sierra Nevada Mountains, unaware that a fearsome storm was gathering force. After months of grueling travel, the 81 men, women and children would be trapped for a brutal winter with little food and only primitive shelter. The conclusion is known: by spring of the next year, the Donner Party was synonymous with the most harrowing extremes of human survival.

Just bad. Terrible ending.
Revisado: 09-09-22
This book was, for me lacking to find a better word…stupid.
The writing was juvenile and the author played a really dirty trick. I don’t want to give too much away, but the author just made changes at the end in order to produce a twist, and it is just lazy writing. Sure authors can easily produce a twist if you just were lying and hiding things throughout the book. That is NOT artfully done.
The characters were so unlikeable and the narration didn’t help. The narrator’s men all sounded the same except for the gay man. The narrator tried to voice the gay character but ended up making him sound like an arrogant man, not a gay one.
The husband, Adam, was so ridiculous, some of his parts ended up sounding like a comedy, because they were so laughable.
At the end I did have more questions about what motivated some actions, and when all is revealed, the plot was so implausible.
