Not Her Best Work - Skip This One

The description of this book makes it sound intriguing and like all three women’s lives are inextricably linked around some great mystery. Two of them are. The third woman, who takes up a disproportionate amount of the story, was entirely irrelevant. The “twist” or “mystery” was blindingly obvious from the moment you have all the character’s names. The story just fell flat. The characters largely don’t grow or change. They just continue to exist because that’s what they know. I truly like this author, but if you’re just trying her work for the first time, don’t start here. It’s not her best.

I finished it, but this book sincerely made me glad the 80’s are over.

This book felt like a mystery novel any history textbook had an information dump for a baby. It told more than it showed, and it didn’t bother even the tiniest bit to make its characters interesting or memorable. It did not help that the narrator made Ben Stein‘s voice sound engaging in comparison. I really don’t know why I kept listening to this because by the end, I didn’t know who the characters were and didn’t care. This book is excellent for background noise if you don’t want to have to worry about being distracted or engaged by what you’re listening to. That’s about all I can recommend it for.

This book sucked me in from the beginning, and I couldn’t believe hours had passed when it finished. There was a character perspective for everyone to enjoy/relate to, action, adventure, intrigue, conflict, and a bit of sexual tension - what every good story should have. Jodi Meadows just keeps getting better and better.

This doesn’t hold a shine to Ready Player One. While the pop culture elements of that novel were integral to the plot, almost another character, in this they wax pathetic, just an author pining for his youth. If anything, they detract from the story and derail it. Also, this story fails to have the same build and excitement I had come to expect. It just fell flat. It was an okay listen, but nothing I will be listening to again any time soon.

**Wil Wheaton does well, as always. He did his best with subpar material.

Good Story, Horrible Narrator

The story was engaging, different, fun. The narrator, however, nearly ruined it. She was so over the top in her enunciation and posh accent that it made the main character grating and inaccessible. At one point she was supposed to be reading as she once did to a child, and it was so wooden that any child I’ve ever read to would have asked me to stop if I’d sounded like her. I liked the books enough that I will be continuing them, but I’ll be getting the actual books to save myself from this awful narrator.

I listened to and read three of the books in this series before I just had to stop because they are so awful. The main character is so completely unbelievable as an assassin that it would be laughable if the writing wasn't so painfully bad. I cannot believe these books got published, never mind that people enjoy them. They really aren't even tolerable as mindless fluff.

I really enjoy these books. Karou is a strong, intelligent and witty heroine. Her best friend is hilarious, delightful and also not to be messed with. The story is imaginative and well-written. In a world where one can easily put a lot of inessential YA literature into their brains, this series is one of the essential ones.

Would you try another book from Margaret Stohl and/or Therese Plummer?

I would try Therese Plummer again. I won't be reading the next in the series.

What do you think your next listen will be?

After this book, I listened to Dangerous Creatures by Margaret Stohl and Kami Garcia. Then I read Unbreakable by Kami Garcia.

What does Therese Plummer bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I don't think she brought anything extra, but I enjoyed her voice.

What character would you cut from Icons?

All of them. They were awful, one-dimensional, and poorly fleshed-out. They were like cardboard cut outs whose actions betrayed none of the emotions the author told us they were having.

Any additional comments?

The story itself was so rushed that it felt like a bad movie adaptation of a good book, only this was the book. At least if they make it into a movie, there's really nothing here to cut out or rush. Honestly, I've never returned an Audible book, but I'm tempted to return this one.
