A very moving and beautifully related story
Revisado: 03-05-23
This is a true story filled with love and disappointments, told by a very talented man who overcame a sometimes beautiful, many times tragic life to become a multi talented writer, musician and, above all, a lovely human being. Read with compassion and understanding and you will be exposed to many realities faced by those who are not included in the daily life of our so called generous and inclusive society. You may see the world through new eyes and hopefully a with new perspective that allows you appreciate and embrace the world around you in a new way.

Historia
Raimund Gregorius teaches classical languages at a Swiss lycée, and lives a life governed by routine. One day, a chance encounter with a Portuguese woman inspires him to question his life - and leads him to an extraordinary book that will open the possibility of changing it. Inspired by the words of Amadeu de Prado, a doctor whose intelligence and magnetism left a mark on everyone who met him and whose principles led him into a confrontation with Salazar’s dictatorship, Gregorius boards a train to Lisbon.

A very thoughtful and well written story
Revisado: 07-17-21
If you enjoy exploring the inner workings of human thought, expression and intimacy you will love this book. Set in Bern, Switzerland and Lisbon, Portugal one solitary man’s sudden departure into a new and unknown life touches many and opens new ways of seeing and feeling. It is a deep and moving experience filled with philosophical and literary references that enrich the text. I loved it and will no doubt return to it many times.

Breathlessly beautiful
Revisado: 01-12-21
Beautifully translated. Read with immense feeling. A poignant and, in its way, timely story.
I followed it by watching Luchino Visconti’s’ picture starring Dirk Bogart who did a magnificent job portraying Gustav von Aschenbach. I then returned to the novel for one more listening. Images from this experience will linger with me for a long time. I enthusiastically recommend this translation of Thomas Mann’s novel Death in Venice narrated by Simon Callow.

Historia
A deathbed confession revolving around Opus Dei and Pinochet, By Night in Chile pours out the self-justifying dark memories of the Jesuit priest Father Urrutia. By Night in Chile's single night-long rant provides a terrifying, clandestine view of the strange bedfellows of church and state in Chile. This wild, eerily compact novel - Roberto Bolaño's first work available in English - recounts the tale of a poor boy who wanted to be a poet but ends up a half-hearted Jesuit priest and conservative literary critic, a sort of lapdog to the rich and powerful cultural elite.

I love Roberto Bolaño
Revisado: 11-14-20
Bolaño is a master of complexity. In this beautifully read piece he explores the mind of a culture as well as his own, through literature. The narrator, a priest and literary critic wanders through his life recounting tales of people he has met who while believing they worked for the greater good most likely fell very short. In the end, he realizes his own shortcomings.

Love Jazz, now I understand why!
Revisado: 11-05-20
I have been listening to jazz for many years now. I even write about local jazz musicians to promote their performances. I loved the way Ted Gioia treated his presentation. His vocabulary is rich and evocative. His enthusiasm infectious. His rich knowledge enviable. Listen. You will be happy you did.

Historia
In Music as a Mirror of History, Great Courses favorite Professor Greenberg of San Francisco Performances returns with a fascinating and provocative premise: Despite the abstractness and the universality of music - and our habit of listening to it divorced from any historical context - music is a mirror of the historical setting in which it was created. Music carries a rich spectrum of social, cultural, historical, and philosophical information, all grounded in the life and experience of the composer.

A poignant telling of the history of western civilization through music and a wonderful narrative by Robert Greenberg.
Revisado: 10-24-20
Greenberg does not mince words in his very accessible narrative. He brings history to us in an exciting, clear and revealing melding of events, characters, cultures and, finally, music. I found this course extremely interesting—a must for anyone interested in furthering their understanding of our past. I thank him for his marvelous work.
